Revolutionizing Mining: The Future of Autonomous Vehicles at Huaneng Yimin Open-Pit Mine

In a pivotal move for the coal mining industry, Huawei and Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG) have joined forces to develop an advanced autonomous driving system that aims to reshape mining operations across China. As the nation grapples with a growing shortage of drivers, this innovative technology promises not only to enhance operational efficiency but also to address pressing environmental concerns.

A New Dawn for Mining Operations

At the forefront of this technological revolution is the Huaneng Yimin open-pit mine, located in Inner Mongolia. Recognizing the urgent need to improve safety and reduce reliance on manned vehicles, the mine has embraced Huawei and XCMG’s comprehensive system. Central to this setup is a private 5G-Advanced network that facilitates seamless communication and control for autonomous vehicles.

Earlier this year, the mine made headlines by introducing 100 autonomous electric trucks—a groundbreaking achievement in China’s mining sector. These trucks now constitute about one-third of the total dump trucks operating within the mine’s expansive 42.4 million square kilometers.

Shu Yingqiu, the mine director, proudly claimed that their operations are “one of the most advanced in the world.” This transformation is reverberating through industry circles, drawing interest from executives of mining companies eager to replicate the innovative capabilities at Huaneng.

Addressing Industry Challenges

China is home to nearly 1,000 open-pit and underground coal mines, alongside approximately 5,000 other mineral extraction sites. Within this complex landscape, Huawei asserts that the nation commands over 45 percent of the global intelligent coal mining market. Despite having over 80,000 mining trucks, only around 5,000 operate autonomously. However, industry experts predict this number will double by 2026, underscoring the urgency for modernization.

Not only is there a need for advanced technology, but also for a new labor model. At Huaneng Yimin, the average worker is over 45 years old, and attracting younger talent has proven challenging. As Shu noted, “Younger people are just not interested in jobs that require long hours and shift work.” By deploying unmanned vehicles, the mine has not only streamlined operations but also reassigned around 350 employees to other roles.

The Economics of Automation

Efficiency and cost savings are significant driving forces behind this technology shift. Huaneng Yimin’s autonomous trucks are designed to replace traditional diesel vehicles, substantially reducing fuel consumption and cutting operational costs. Each electric truck can save an impressive CNY158,000 (approximately $22,200) annually, a staggering figure when considering the mine’s requirement for 75,000 tons of fuel each year, which can account for up to 50 percent of variable costs.

Furthermore, the introduction of electric trucks has improved operational efficiency, allowing them to run for up to 22 hours a day, as opposed to just 17-18 hours previously. An onsite solar farm powers these vehicles, ensuring they remain charged and operational without significant downtime.

Pioneering 5G-A Technology

The backbone of this transformation is the 5G-A network, which offers remarkable uplink speeds of 500Mb/s and latency of just 20 milliseconds. This infrastructure supports high-definition video backhaul and cloud-based dispatching of autonomous trucks. Approximately 800 cameras are installed across the site to monitor conditions, while Huawei has developed AI algorithms for precise positioning of vehicles.

Shao Qi, General Manager of Huawei’s open-pit mine division, emphasized real-time communication as a critical aspect of the operation, especially with the ongoing integration of both autonomous and manned vehicles. Compliance with emerging industry standards is also a focus, as the mine collaborates with regulatory authorities to ensure safety and efficiency.

Future Aspirations: Driving Towards 100% Automation

The future holds ambitious plans for Huaneng Yimin. Shu indicated that the mine is awaiting approval from its parent company to double the number of autonomous trucks by next year. The ultimate goal is to transition to a fully driverless operation in the long run, which adds complexity as they aim to integrate additional heavy machinery used during the excavation process.

To navigate the potential challenges ahead, the mine has deployed a lidar system supported by China’s BeDou satellite system, which monitors slope conditions—one of the most hazardous elements of large-scale mining. With the aid of AI, the system can adapt to real-time conditions, ensuring that operations remain safe regardless of the environment.
