Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank’s Commitment to Sustainable Finance

Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB) has made significant strides in sustainable financing, announcing that it has successfully mobilized AED 17 billion (approximately $4.63 billion) by the end of 2024. This achievement is a crucial step toward meeting its ambitious goal of AED 60 billion (about $16.3 billion) in sustainable finance by the year 2030.

Progress Highlighted in the 2024 Sustainability Report

The details of this milestone are outlined in ADIB’s recently published 2024 Sustainability Report. This report elaborates on the bank’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, aligning closely with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 objectives and the national strategy aimed at achieving sustainability by 2031. The report serves as a testament to ADIB’s commitment to building a greener future.

Pioneering Financed Emissions Targets

ADIB has distinguished itself as the first Islamic bank in the region to establish sector-specific financed emissions targets. These targets are focused on six high-emission sectors, including real estate, utilities, and home finance. By setting these interim targets for 2030, ADIB is aligning its strategy with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Net Zero scenarios, as well as the UAE’s national decarbonization objectives.

Key Initiatives and Achievements

The 2024 Sustainability Report also highlights several notable initiatives undertaken by ADIB:

  • Double Materiality Assessment: ADIB has conducted an assessment that complies with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), providing a robust framework for ESG evaluation.

  • Green Sukuk Issuance: The bank published its inaugural Green Sukuk allocation and impact report following a successful $500 million green issuance.

  • Sustainable Financial Allocation: A significant 90 percent of the Green Sukuk proceeds have been channeled toward renewable energy projects, energy efficiency improvements, and sustainable water infrastructure. This initiative has led to an impressive reduction of 607,000 tonnes in annual emissions.

Leadership Perspectives on Sustainability

Mohamed Abdelbary, the Group Chief Executive Officer of ADIB, expressed pride in the bank’s progress and commitment to sustainability. He emphasized that integrating sustainability into the core operations of ADIB represents one of the three fundamental pillars of the bank’s 2035 vision. Abdelbary stated, “We’re proud of the progress we’re making and how we’re using our financing to contribute to the transition of our customers and the economy.”

He further noted that the bank’s latest sustainability disclosures are indicative of its unwavering dedication to ethical and climate-aligned banking practices. "From leading the region in green sukuk to setting the benchmark on sectoral decarbonization, we are taking decisive steps toward a low-carbon future."

Emission Reduction Achievements

In terms of environmental impact, ADIB reported a substantial 87 percent reduction in Scope 1 emissions and a 3.51 percent decrease in Scope 2 emissions when compared to 2022 data. These achievements are largely attributable to ongoing investments in energy efficiency, operational optimization, and electrification of processes.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

ADIB’s double materiality approach not only assesses how sustainability influences the bank’s business performance but also considers how its operations affect society and the environment. This comprehensive assessment aligns with global best practices for corporate sustainability disclosures.

Strengthening Social Commitments

Beyond its environmental goals, ADIB is enhancing its social impact initiatives. Key outcomes in this area include:

  • Emiratisation Rate: The bank has successfully achieved a 44 percent Emiratisation rate, reflecting its commitment to local workforce inclusion.

  • Gender Inclusivity: An impressive 72 percent of UAE national hires in 2024 were women, highlighting ADIB’s focus on equal employment opportunities.

  • Workforce Composition: Currently, women make up 39 percent of ADIB’s total workforce, further underscoring its dedication to gender equity.

Through these initiatives, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank is not only making considerable strides in sustainable finance but is also, fundamentally, redefining the role of Islamic banking in fostering environmental and social responsibility.
