AG3 Labs co-founded by NASA USRC alumni to develop low-cost drones for military training

Published:

AG3 Labs, co-founded by alumni of NASA’s University Student Research Challenge (USRC), is making strides in the development of low-cost drones tailored for military training exercises. Founded in 2024 by Gavin Gardner and his team, the company emerged from a series of innovative projects funded by NASA, showcasing the intersection of engineering expertise and entrepreneurial spirit in the aerospace sector.

Gardner’s journey began as a Michigan State University engineering student, where he engaged in research on next-generation drone technology under a NASA grant. He quickly realized that the challenges of managing finances and promoting their work were as significant as the technical hurdles. This dual focus on engineering and entrepreneurship is a core tenet of the USRC, which aims to cultivate a new generation of aerospace innovators.

From Concept to Company

The foundation for AG3 Labs was laid through Gardner’s involvement in various USRC projects. One notable initiative was the Aerial Intra-city Delivery Electric Drones (AIDED), which explored the concept of drones hitching rides on city buses to deliver cargo. Although the team ultimately decided against pursuing this commercial venture due to regulatory concerns, the experience honed their technical skills and confidence.

In 2023, the team received a second USRC award for the Laser Energized Aerial Drone System (LEADS), which focused on innovative power transfer methods for drones in flight. This project not only advanced their technical capabilities but also expanded Gardner’s professional network, connecting him with NASA personnel and internship opportunities that further enriched his experience.

Military Applications and Growth

As Gardner approached graduation in 2025, he and his co-founders recognized a market need for low-cost drones in military training environments. Their initial contract with the U.S. Army validated their concept, leading to additional contracts that allowed AG3 Labs to scale operations significantly. Today, the company boasts the capacity to produce thousands of drones each month, positioning itself as a key player in the military drone sector.

Gardner attributes much of their success to the foundational experiences gained through the USRC, particularly in navigating the business aspects of technology development. “I don’t think I would discredit our technical expertise in getting us to where we are today, but I know that USRC was a booster that really amplified our trajectory at such a young age,” he stated.

Future Implications for Drone Technology

The emergence of AG3 Labs highlights the growing importance of integrating technical innovation with practical applications in military contexts. As the demand for effective counter-drone systems increases, the company’s focus on developing affordable and efficient drone solutions could play a crucial role in enhancing military training and operational readiness.

With the backing of NASA’s USRC and a clear vision for the future, AG3 Labs is poised to contribute significantly to the evolving landscape of military drone technology, demonstrating how academic initiatives can lead to impactful entrepreneurial ventures.
