Air Force plans to field 100 Massed Modular Aircraft drones by 2029

Published:

The United States Air Force is advancing its plans for the Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) unmanned platform, with intentions to field 100 of these drones by 2029 and 500 by 2032. This announcement was made by Air Force Secretary Troy Meink during his keynote address at the 2026 AFA Air, Space, Cyber Conference. The original goal was to have only 20 drones in service by fiscal 2031, indicating a significant acceleration in the program’s timeline.

Drones and ISR Infrastructure

Airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) are critical for maintaining information superiority on the battlefield. As threats evolve and the operational environment expands, the need for flexible and adaptable ISR platforms becomes increasingly important. The integration of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) into ISR capabilities presents both opportunities and challenges for the U.S. military.

According to Lt. Gen. Christopher Niemi, the Air Force’s chief modernization officer, a key focus will be on standardizing control interfaces for these drones. He emphasized the desire for multiple aircraft designs that can be operated through a common interface, making control more intuitive and accessible for operators. This approach aims to streamline operations and enhance the effectiveness of drone missions.

The Role of Space in ISR

As the battlefield extends into space, ISR capabilities must also adapt. The U.S. Space Force, particularly Delta 7, is tasked with space-based ISR, monitoring adversarial activities and providing intelligence support for combat operations. The Space Force is actively tracking the ISR capabilities of adversaries like Russia and China, which have developed extensive satellite networks and anti-satellite technologies.

In his address, Meink highlighted that the U.S. has developed on-orbit space control weapons to defend against potential threats from adversaries, ensuring readiness to meet evolving challenges in the domain of space warfare.
