Unusual Airbnb Rule: “No Crypto-Mining” After Guest Uses Property for Mining

An Airbnb host recently made headlines after updating her listing with a new and unusual rule – “no crypto-mining.” The decision came after a guest stayed at her property for three weeks and used it to mine cryptocurrency, resulting in a hefty electric bill of $1,500.

The host, known as superhost Ashley, shared her experience on TikTok, where she explained that the guest left the property in an “amazing state” but caused a significant increase in electricity usage. She discovered the guest had set up multiple computers for mining cryptocurrency and even hired an electrician to install a Tesla box outside for an electric vehicle station.

Despite the unexpected expense, Ashley charged the guest for the electricity bill, which the guest willingly paid as they had reportedly made over $100,000 during their stay. The host, who usually charges extra for electricity usage over $450, decided to add “no electric vehicle charging” to her list of house rules.

This incident prompted Ashley to share some of her other “weird” Airbnb rules on TikTok, including “no political signs in the yard” and a strict communication curfew of 8 p.m. for non-emergencies. The host’s story serves as a cautionary tale for Airbnb hosts and guests alike, highlighting the importance of clear communication and mutual respect when staying in someone else’s property.
