Queen Alia International Airport Reaches New Sustainability Milestone

Aig’s Commitment to Energy Management

In a significant move towards enhancing sustainability and operational excellence, Airport International Group (AIG), which manages Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) in Jordan, has achieved the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System certification. Alongside this achievement, AIG has successfully renewed four key ISO certifications that form part of its Integrated Management System at QAIA.

First in the Region for ISO 50001 Certification

With this certification, QAIA proudly stands as the first airport in the Middle East to obtain the ISO 50001 standard. This accomplishment not only highlights QAIA’s leadership in energy management but also sets a new standard in the region for sustainable airport operations. The certification process and renewals were conducted in collaboration with Bureau Veritas – Jordan, emphasizing AIG’s commitment to adhering to international best practices and striving for continuous improvement.

Systematic Approach to Energy Management

ISO 50001 recognizes AIG’s structured and data-driven approach to managing energy. This certification enables the airport to efficiently monitor and control its energy consumption across all operations, enhancing both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. By integrating this standard into the airport’s broader management strategy, QAIA aims to support long-term financial and ecological sustainability.

Renewed ISO Certifications

In addition to the ISO 50001 certification, QAIA has renewed its compliance with several internationally recognized standards. These include:

  • ISO 9001: Quality Management
  • ISO 14001: Environmental Management
  • ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management
  • ISO 10002: Complaints Handling

These renewals further reinforce QAIA’s commitment to global standards and operational excellence in various aspects of airport management.

Leadership Comments on Achievements

In light of these accomplishments, Nicolas Deviller, the Chief Executive Officer of AIG, remarked, “This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to operational excellence, sustainability, and responsible growth.” He elaborated that achieving the ISO 50001 certification, along with the renewal of various ISO standards, demonstrates how a comprehensive management framework can enhance efficiency, resilience, and long-term stakeholder value. Deviller expressed pride in leading the region in energy management and the desire to continually raise the bar for the aviation sector.

Complementary Sustainable Initiatives

The certification of ISO 50001 builds on QAIA’s prior sustainability initiatives, including the implementation of an on-site solar farm and the electrification of airport vehicles. These efforts showcase the airport’s leadership in carbon management, highlighted further by the renewal of its Level 4+ certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. This acknowledgment from ACI Asia-Pacific and Middle East is valid through 2028, showcasing QAIA’s ongoing dedication to sustainable aviation.

Strengthening Stakeholder Confidence and Resilience

Together, these accomplishments not only enhance operational resilience but also boost stakeholder confidence in AIG’s strategic direction. With a firm commitment to sustainable aviation infrastructure, AIG continues to establish itself as a leader in the region, paving the way for more environmentally friendly practices in the aviation industry.

By achieving and maintaining these prestigious certifications, QAIA sets an example for other airports, emphasizing the importance of sustainable operations in today’s aviation landscape. The airport’s efforts put it at the forefront of the industry, guiding it toward a more sustainable future.
