Training on Geographic Information Systems in Eritrea
Collaboration with the United Nations
In a recent initiative, the Ministry of Land, Water, and Environment in Eritrea teamed up with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa to deliver specialized training on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. This collaborative effort involved 25 professionals drawn from various ministries, including Finance and National Development, Marine Resources, Agriculture, and regional administrations.
Understanding GIS and Remote Sensing
The training provided was comprehensive, focusing on essential aspects of GIS technology. Participants explored fundamental concepts and components of GIS, gaining insights into cartographic reference units and their benefits. The curriculum included cartographic design and examined practical applications of cartographic information systems. Emphasis was placed on the compilation, integration, and digitalization of environmental data, crucial for informed planning and decision-making.
This session built on prior training sessions held in 2025, aiming to strengthen the capacity for evidence-based management and policy formulation.
Expert Perspectives
Mr. Tesfai Gebreselasie, the Minister of Land, Water, and Environment, highlighted the importance of this training for improving coordination in geographic information utilization within governmental decision-making processes.
