The British Army has successfully experimented with a drone swarm in a realistic military environment, marking a significant advancement in the UK’s ability to deploy autonomous systems on the battlefield. This initiative is part of the Software Defined Swarms Concept Demonstrator, delivered by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in collaboration with Army Headquarters and industry partners. The project builds on joint activities within the AUKUS Pillar 2 framework and aims to enhance the Army’s combat effectiveness and operational advantage.
Details of the Drone Swarm Demonstration
The demonstrator represents a major step forward in the UK’s use of autonomous systems. It provides insights into how swarming drones can be effectively and safely utilized in support of tasks such as Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. The project combines over a decade of Dstl research in artificial intelligence, autonomy, and swarming technology into a practical capability.
During the trials, two industry-led options were tested: one by BlueBear (a SAAB Company) and another by the Disruptor Group, a consortium of UK companies led by Applied Intuition. These demonstrations were conducted in realistic operational environments, allowing the Army to evaluate their effectiveness in completing representative battlefield tasks.
Future Applications and Flexibility
While the current demonstrator utilized uncrewed aerial systems, the underlying technology is also applicable to uncrewed ground vehicles and uncrewed surface vessels. The system’s design incorporates open architectures, ensuring flexibility throughout its service life and the ability to adapt to emerging technologies and evolving threats. This adaptability is crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness, as highlighted by lessons learned from recent conflicts.
The Swarm Capability Test Bed (CTB) is now in the hands of British Army operators and is a focus for live flying by the Army’s Experimentation and Trials Group (ETG). The Army has already completed eight weeks of experimentation with the CTB, which consists of eight uncrewed aerial vehicles. Additional experiments, trials, and field tests are planned for 2026 to 2027, which will help shape future military capabilities and procurement decisions.

Brigadier Kieran Sheldon, Head Military Capability Plans at Army Headquarters, noted the energizing effect of the partnership with Dstl, stating that the technology for true swarms has significant potential. He added that the Army is now better informed and empowered to seize this opportunity, which could accelerate the adoption of uncrewed, autonomous, and swarming systems to enhance fighting power through cost-effective solutions.
