Mumbai: Major CBI Raid Uncovers Bribery Scandal in CGST Department
In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested eight individuals, including six officials from the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Department, Mumbai West Commissionerate, and a chartered accountant, in connection with a bribery scandal involving Rs 20 lakhs. The operatives were caught red-handed during a transaction after the CBI set a trap following a formal complaint.
The accused officials, identified as Deepak Kumar Sharma (Assistant Commissioner), Sachin Gokulka (Joint Commissioner), and four Superintendents—Bijender Janawa, Nikhil Agarwal, Nitin Kumar Gupta, and Rahul Kumar—were reported to have coerced the complainant into paying a bribe to avoid arrest. Initially demanding a staggering Rs 80 lakhs, the officers settled for Rs 60 lakhs, of which Rs 30 lakhs had already been transferred through the illicit hawala route.
According to the complainant, his ordeal began on September 4, 2024, when he was allegedly detained unlawfully at the CGST office in Santacruz for over 18 hours. He recounted being subjected to threats and verbal abuse, forcing him to arrange for the bribe through his cousin under extreme duress.
This operation highlights alarming levels of corruption within the CGST department, raising serious concerns about the integrity of tax enforcement mechanisms. Following their arrest, the accused have been remanded to CBI custody until September 10, 2024, as investigations continue. The CBI is also looking into the role of hawala operators and possible connections to other corrupt practices within the department.
This high-profile arrest underscores the CBI’s commitment to combating corruption and promoting accountability in government operations, with further developments expected soon.
