“Indian Central Bureau of Investigation Takes Down Massive Transnational Cybercrime Network”

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India has made a significant breakthrough in combating transnational cybercrime with the arrest of 26 individuals and the seizure of millions worth in cash, cryptocurrency, and gold bullions. In an operation dubbed “Operation Chakra-III,” the CBI worked in collaboration with international law enforcement agencies to dismantle a sophisticated cybercrime network that targeted victims globally.

The operation began with the arrest of key suspect Vishnu Rathi, who led a group that scammed a U.S. citizen into transferring nearly half a million dollars into cryptocurrency wallets under false pretenses. This tactic of exploiting victims’ fears of compromised bank accounts is a common strategy used by cybercriminals.

As the operation progressed, raids conducted across multiple Indian cities resulted in the recovery of cash, gold bullion, and electronic devices containing crucial evidence. The focus then expanded to target call centers in Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Visakhapatnam, where over 170 individuals were engaged in various forms of online fraud, primarily targeting U.S. citizens.

A total of 951 electronic devices were seized during the raids, along with significant amounts of cash and luxury vehicles linked to the suspects. The 26 operatives arrested face charges under India’s Information Technology Act and the BNSS Act of 2023, highlighting the severity of their crimes.

The successful operation, aided by cooperation with INTERPOL and U.S. authorities, underscores the importance of international collaboration in combatting cybercrime. With ongoing investigations to uncover more layers of the criminal operation, the CBI’s efforts signal a significant shift in how they approach cybercrime and showcase India’s commitment to strengthening its cybersecurity practices.
