Raipur: An Investigation into Allegations Against IG Ratanlal Dangi
Raipur has recently found itself at the center of a serious controversy involving Inspector General (IG) Ratanlal Dangi, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer in Chhattisgarh. The allegations, made by the wife of a sub-inspector, involve claims of sexual harassment that span over a distressing seven-year period. This has prompted an official inquiry from the state police headquarters, aimed at addressing the gravity of the situation.
Inquiry Underway: Both Parties Summoned
In pursuing justice and accountability, the state police headquarters has appointed two senior officials—Dr. Anand Chhabra, a 2001 batch IPS officer, and IPS Officer Milna Kurre—to oversee the investigation. Notices have been issued to both the complainant and the accused, requiring their presence at police headquarters to provide formal statements.
The inquiry aims to be conducted “impartially and transparently,” as stated in an official announcement. Investigating officers will meticulously scrutinize digital evidence, including call records, chat logs, and relevant CCTV footage provided by the complainant. Dr. Chhabra emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation, affirming, “Every digital record presented will undergo forensic scrutiny.”
The Allegations: Seven Years of Harassment and Digital Evidence
The allegations brought forth by the complainant—a yoga instructor and wife of a sub-inspector—reveal a troubling narrative. According to her, IG Dangi allegedly began harassing her in 2017 after they met through social media while he was serving as the Superintendent of Police in Korba. Despite subsequent transfers to various districts, communication between them reportedly persisted.
The complainant asserts that IG Dangi frequently summoned her to his official residence when his wife was not present. During these encounters, she claims she was pressured to engage in video calls that lasted for hours, which she found distressing. The emotional toll of these experiences led her to approach the Director General of Police (DGP) with compelling evidence, including video recordings and documentation of interactions.
Dangi’s Response: “A Case of Blackmail”
In response to these serious accusations, IG Dangi has categorically denied all claims, labeling them as “baseless and motivated.” He has filed a comprehensive 14-point complaint with DGP Arun Dev Gautam, accusing the complainant and her associates of blackmail, psychological harassment, and intimidation.
In a public statement, Dangi claimed, “This is a calculated attempt to malign my reputation.” He has expressed his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation, insisting on the importance of an unbiased examination to unearth the truth.
Chief Minister’s Stern Message: “Law is Equal for All”
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai has adopted a resolute stance in light of this growing controversy. He emphasized the necessity for accountability and transparency, stating unequivocally that status will not protect anyone from scrutiny. During a visit to Marwahi, he remarked, “It doesn’t matter who the officer is—if allegations have been made, there will be an investigation, and if those allegations are proven true, strict action will follow.”
His remarks reflect a strong commitment to the principle of “zero tolerance for misconduct” within the state administration.
Early Stage of Investigation
As the investigation is still in its early stages, the primary focus remains on collecting evidence and testimonies from all involved. Both the complainant and IG Dangi have been called in to submit their statements, which will form the basis of the inquiry’s findings.
The state government has reassured the public that the investigation will remain free from external pressure or undue influence. In the words of Chief Minister Sai, “This new Chhattisgarh will be governed by accountability and the rule of law.”
Next Steps
Following the completion of the investigation, the compiled report will be presented to the Director General of Police, who will decide the subsequent course of action. For now, the inquiry is concentrated on meticulously piecing together facts, ensuring that every aspect of the case is thoroughly examined.
As the investigation unfolds, it is not merely a matter of personal accusations but also an indicator of broader trends in the demand for transparency and ethical accountability within law enforcement. The case serves as a litmus test for the state’s commitment to upholding the principle that no one, irrespective of position, is above the law.
