In 2024, a patient at a London hospital tragically passed away as a direct result of disruptions caused by a cyber attack on Synnovis, a British diagnostic services provider. This incident not only hampered blood test results but also had broader implications for patient care, as stated by the NHS and the management of King’s College Hospital in South London.

An NHS spokesperson confirmed, “One patient sadly died unexpectedly during the cyber attack. Following standard procedure, we conducted a thorough review of their care.” They elaborated that this assessment uncovered multiple factors contributing to the unfortunate outcome, highlighting that delays in receiving critical blood test results were among them.

Family Notification and Investigation Findings

The family of the patient has been informed of the circumstances surrounding the death, though specific details remain undisclosed. Synnovis’s CEO, Mark Dollar, extended condolences to the grieving family, conveying the organization’s deep sorrow over the incident. “We are deeply saddened to hear that last year’s criminal cyber attack has been identified as one of the contributing factors that led to this patient’s death. The incident has broader implications; recent findings from the South East London Integrated Care Board reveal that around 170 patients experienced harm due to the Synnovis ransomware attack, although the majority of these cases were classified as "low harm."

The ransomware attack on Synnovis took place in June 2024, when the Qilin ransomware group claimed to have stolen approximately 400 gigabytes of sensitive data, including patient names, birth dates, and NHS numbers. This breach raised eyebrows and has prompted significant concern among patients and healthcare providers alike.

In light of this devastating event, NHS England has reiterated its commitment to addressing potential security vulnerabilities. An NHS spokesperson noted, “We understand that people may be concerned by this, and we are continuing to work with Synnovis, the National Cyber Security Centre, and other partners to assess the impact of the cyber attack.”

Dr. Chris Streather, the medical director for NHS London, underscored the ongoing repercussions of the attack. While some services have begun to return to normal levels, the cyber attack has continued to disrupt various NHS operations in southeast London. “Although we are seeing some services operating at near normal levels and have seen a reduction in the number of elective procedures being postponed, the cyber attack on Synnovis is continuing to have a significant impact on NHS services,” he stated.

Dr. Streather expressed empathy for those affected by the disruptions, emphasizing the emotional toll on patients and their families. “Having treatment postponed is distressing for patients and their families, and I would like to apologize to any patient who has been impacted by the incident," he said, adding that hospital staff were working diligently to reschedule appointments and treatments.
