Critical Start Releases Biannual Cyber Threat Intelligence Report for First Half of 2024

In the first half of 2024, Critical Start released its biannual Cyber Threat Intelligence Report, shedding light on the top threat trends impacting various industries. From manufacturing to professional services, the report highlighted key findings that underscore the evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats.

One alarming discovery was that manufacturing emerged as the top targeted industry by malicious actors, with a staggering 377 verified reports of ransomware attacks and database leaks. On the other hand, the technology sector saw a slight decrease in ransomware incidents, while healthcare and life sciences experienced a significant 180% increase in ransomware and data exposure cases.

Engineering and construction also faced a substantial uptick in cyberattacks, with a 46.15% rise compared to previous periods. Professional services were not spared either, witnessing a 15% increase in ransomware attacks and data leaks.

Security experts weighed in on the report’s findings, emphasizing the critical need for organizations to focus on building resilience through a zero-trust security model and robust backup and recovery protocols. Darren Guccione, CEO of Keeper Security, underscored the importance of maintaining network segmentation and separating IT and OT networks to limit the attack surface.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2024 and beyond, Stephen Kowski from SlashNext Email Security+ foresees an increase in breaches targeting healthcare, critical infrastructure, and supply chains. He emphasized enhancing email security, implementing zero-trust architectures, and improving threat detection and response capabilities.

Ultimately, as cyber threats continue to evolve in sophistication and frequency, organizations must remain vigilant and proactive in fortifying their defenses to safeguard against potential cyber-attacks.
