Wave of Bomb Threats in Delhi Schools: A Growing Concern

In recent days, over 50 schools across Delhi have experienced alarming bomb threats sent via email, igniting fear and anxiety among students and their parents. On July 18 alone, 40 schools received these menacing messages, prompting immediate responses from authorities.

Overview of Threats Received

According to data from Delhi Police, the northern parts of the city faced multiple threats, including notable institutions such as St. Xavier’s School, IP College for Women, Hindu College, and Sri Ram College of Commerce. Meanwhile, the central district reported just one incident.

Notable Institutions Targeted

The list of targeted schools is extensive, featuring several well-known names. Prominent institutions like DPS Mathura Road, DPS RK Puram, and The British School are among those that were threatened. Other schools affected include Amity International School (Saket), The Heritage School (Rohini), and Modern International School.

Alongside these, various private and international schools also received threats. Some of these include Cambridge Foundation School, Big Feather International School, and Hansraj Model School. The wide net cast by these threats has raised concerns about both student safety and mental well-being.

Content of the Threatening Emails

The emails sent to schools bore deeply unsettling language. One particular email warned, “I will erase every last one of you from this world,” suggesting that explosive devices had been hidden within classrooms. The graphic nature of these threats has understandably caused distress among parents and students alike.

One message, directed at Richmond Global School, specified the use of trinitrotoluene, a powerful explosive, claiming it was concealed in black plastic bags. The sender also discussed personal struggles with mental health, lamenting a lack of support from medical professionals. Such revelations within the threat only add layers of complexity to an already harrowing situation.

An Escalating Series of Hoaxes

This troubling series of bomb threats is not isolated. In fact, just two days prior, at least seven more schools reported receiving similar emails, marking a pattern of disturbances that has continued throughout the week. On July 16, threats were issued for three consecutive days, leading to the deployment of bomb disposal teams to the affected areas.

Authorities confirmed that this uptick in threats follows closely after earlier incidents where schools and St. Stephen’s College had to be evacuated due to bomb warnings.

Challenges in Tracking the Perpetrators

Experts from the Delhi Police suspect that the individuals behind these threats are utilizing Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and dark web services to obscure their identities. A police officer described the difficulty of tracking these cybercriminals, noting that it’s akin to chasing shadows. The complexity increases due to the use of multiple proxy servers, making identification and tracing particularly challenging.

Cybersecurity analysis indicates a consistent pattern in these threats, where vague yet alarming messaging is commonly sent just before school hours. The repeated use of international servers makes it all the more difficult to pinpoint the source.

Response from Authorities

Rajneesh Gupta, the Joint Commissioner of Police, confirmed that the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit is working tirelessly to unravel these threats. The police have developed specialized monitoring systems designed to combat this issue, though the inherent obscurity of VPN technology complicates their efforts.

It’s also worth noting that earlier this month, a 12-year-old was arrested for sending bomb threat emails as a prank. Previous instances of bomb threats in the city revealed that no explosives were ever found, leading law enforcement to treat the current situation with increased seriousness rather than dismissing it as a mere prank.

Continued Threat Landscape

Delhi has seen a troubling trend of bomb threats, with incidents reported in the past year alone ranging from explosions near schools to multiple threats sent to hundreds of institutions. Following these events, the Directorate of Education (DoE) instituted a 115-point Standard Operating Procedure in May to better manage bomb threats in schools.

As this situation unfolds, the psychological impact on families and the educational community continues to rise, necessitating not just preventative measures but also discussions around mental health support for all involved.
