Centereach Woman Sentenced for Dark Web Drug Trafficking

A Cautionary Tale from the Shadows of the Internet

In a significant legal ruling, Carolyn Tolin, a woman from Centereach, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting to running a substantial drug trafficking operation through the dark web. This case highlights the intricate and dangerous world of online narcotics trade and serves as a stark reminder of its real-world consequences.

The Operation Behind “MamaKnowsBrown”

Between September 2024 and March 2025, Tolin orchestrated an illicit business that dealt in over $75,000 worth of narcotics, including cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin. Operating under the moniker “MamaKnowsBrown,” Tolin provided a platform for customers seeking various substances. Users could order heroin, fentanyl, crack cocaine, and powder cocaine, often with multiple shipping options available. Feedback and product reviews were also part of her approach, making her dark web storefront seem almost legitimate.

Methods of Delivery and Payment

Once an order was placed, Tolin utilized the United States Postal Service and UPS for nationwide shipping. For local deliveries within Suffolk County, she even employed Uber to transport the drugs directly to customers. Payments for these transactions were made through cryptocurrency, which Tolin would later convert into cash, demonstrating a level of sophistication in her operation that combined technical savvy with criminal intent.

Law Enforcement Action

The tide turned for Tolin when law enforcement executed a search warrant at her residence in Centereach on March 14, 2025. Inside her garage, officers uncovered substantial quantities of fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine, alongside vital evidence of her operation including computers, cell phones, and even packaging materials intended for drug shipments. Notably, they also found her overdoses warning cards, which further illustrated the dangerous nature of her business.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

On November 20, 2025, Tolin pleaded guilty to serious charges, including criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree—a Class A-1 felony—and attempted operation as a major trafficker, a Class B felony. The ramifications of her actions culminated in a sentence delivered on January 22, 2025, where Tolin was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.

Remarks from the District Attorney

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney commented on the case, stating, “This defendant exploited technology to run a deadly narcotics enterprise. Her resourcefulness and business acumen could have led to legitimate success, but instead, she chose to poison our community and believed she could outsmart the law.” The DA emphasized that Tolin’s actions placed the community at risk, and her miscalculations have now led to significant legal consequences.

The Broader Impact of Dark Web Drug Trafficking

Tolin’s case is part of a growing issue concerning drug trafficking on the dark web, where anonymity and technological sophistication often complicate law enforcement efforts. The challenges presented by these underground networks highlight the ongoing struggle to combat the opioid crisis and the increasing accessibility of dangerous substances via online platforms.

As the landscape of drug trafficking evolves, so too does the need for regulatory measures and community awareness. This case serves as both a warning and a call to action for individuals to recognize the real dangers associated with the dark web and the illicit activities that take place beyond the confines of traditional markets.
