Dubai Launches Cutting-Edge Satellite Monitoring Platform for Marine Safety

Dubai is on the verge of unveiling a new satellite-powered monitoring platform specifically designed to keep an eye on its coasts, ports, and marine environment in real time. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) and the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), underscoring the city’s commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced marine management.

Formal Agreement at GITEX Global 2025

The partnership was officially established during GITEX Global 2025, where Salem Humaid AlMarri, the Director General of MBRSC, and Nasser Abdulla Al Neyadi, the CEO of PCFC, signed a memorandum of understanding. This agreement sets the stage for advancing marine monitoring capabilities in Dubai, enabling both organizations to work together in sharing expertise and resources.

Innovative Real-Time Marine Monitoring

The new system aims to seamlessly blend satellite imagery with ground-based analytics. This combination will facilitate real-time tracking of coastal changes, vessel movement, and various sea conditions. By utilizing this innovative monitoring approach, Dubai can proactively respond to environmental and maritime challenges.

Comprehensive Applications

The applications of this platform are vast and include monitoring wave patterns, analyzing disruptions in the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and detecting oil spills. All these capabilities aim to enhance maritime safety while promoting environmental sustainability, crucial elements in Dubai’s thriving maritime sector.

Commitment to Environmental Protection

Salem Humaid AlMarri highlighted the importance of this partnership by stating, “We are pleased to partner with the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation in this strategic initiative, which represents a significant step towards enhancing their capabilities in monitoring the marine and coastal environment.” He emphasized that leveraging space-based data not only strengthens decision-making accuracy but also establishes a strong groundwork for environmental protection and maritime security.

Nasser Abdulla Al Neyadi echoed this sentiment, declaring, “This MoU marks an important milestone in improving our smart marine monitoring capabilities by utilizing the advanced satellite data provided by MBRSC.” He further elaborated on how the integrated monitoring platform will streamline marine and security operations across Dubai’s ports, thereby reinforcing efforts to safeguard the marine environment and detect oil spills with greater precision.

Forward-Thinking Strategies for Smart Operations

This collaboration exemplifies the commitment to adopting innovative space technologies and intelligent data analysis, a move that aligns with Dubai’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in marine innovation and sustainability. Building on Existing Technological Foundations

This initiative builds on MBRSC’s growing Earth-observation program. Earlier this year, the center introduced MBZ-SAT, recognized as the region’s most advanced imaging satellite, alongside Etihad-SAT, the first Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite in the area. Together, these satellites offer high-resolution optical and radar imaging that cater to a range of civil, maritime, and environmental applications, further enhancing the capabilities of the new monitoring platform.

As Dubai moves forward with this satellite monitoring initiative, it is clear that the city is not just investing in technology but prioritizing environmental health and maritime safety through intelligent, data-supported strategies.
