Dubai’s Public Transport Network Expansion: A New Era of Mobility

Dubai is embarking on an ambitious initiative to enhance its public transport system, aiming to elevate service quality and provide seamless mobility solutions for both residents and visitors. This strategic plan by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is poised to transform how people navigate the city.

Enhancing the Transportation Infrastructure

The RTA is focused on improving the public transport infrastructure with a clear goal: to encourage more residents to opt for mass transit options in their daily commutes. “The project complements RTA’s efforts to enhance the public transport infrastructure and encourage residents to use mass transit for their daily commuting,” stated Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA. According to the Dubai Media Office, the bus depots play a crucial role in this initiative, serving as primary hubs for the maintenance and cleaning of an extensive fleet of 1,387 buses.

A Major Addition of Eco-Friendly Buses

As part of this initiative, Dubai is set to welcome 637 new Euro 6 buses between 2025 and 2026. This addition not only bolsters the fleet but also adheres to stringent environmental standards, underscoring Dubai’s commitment to green transport solutions. Al Tayer highlighted that the new bus stations will extend beyond conventional waiting areas, offering integrated services designed to enhance passenger experience.

Modernized Bus Stations for Enhanced Accessibility

The RTA’s project has also included significant upgrades to 16 bus stations, notably nine in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai. These renovations include:

  • Refurbished passenger waiting areas
  • Renovated building façades
  • Modern infrastructural systems
  • Enhanced pavements
  • Designated prayer areas

These stations serve a total of 110 bus routes and can comfortably accommodate around 710 buses during peak hours, marking a significant improvement in service capability.

Upgraded Bus Depots for Operational Efficiency

In parallel with the bus stations, upgrades have been conducted at six key bus depots located in Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwayah, Al Awir, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz. The enhancements involve:

  • Revamping existing workshops
  • Creating dedicated lanes for vehicle inspections and maintenance
  • Installing engine washing systems
  • Improving driver accommodation facilities
  • Upgrading lighting and drainage systems
  • Bolstering security infrastructure

These upgrades are vital in maximizing operational efficiency and ensuring the smooth functioning of the bus network.

Supporting Sustainable Transportation Solutions

The overarching goal of this initiative is to strengthen connections among various modes of public transport, particularly through first and last-mile solutions. Accessibility to bus stations will be improved with pedestrian pathways, bicycle parking facilities, and safe crossings, promoting a shift towards sustainable transport options.

Comprehensive Investments in Modern Fleet

The RTA’s commitment to a modern and efficient fleet is further demonstrated by a procurement agreement for 637 new buses that meet Euro 6 emission standards. This procurement features:

  • 40 electric buses from Zhongtong, specifically designed to meet Gulf specifications and rigorously tested in local conditions.
  • 451 city buses, with 400 being 12-meter MAN buses accommodating up to 86 passengers and 51 Zhongtong buses, each with a 72-passenger capacity.

Also included are 76 double-decker VOLVO buses measuring 13 meters long with a capacity of 98 passengers and 70 articulated Isuzu Anadolu buses, which are 18 meters long and can carry 111 passengers.

Conclusion

This comprehensive project is set to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of public transport in Dubai, catering to the needs of a growing population while promoting environmentally friendly options. By targeting both the infrastructure and the fleet, RTA aims to foster a robust public transport network that meets the demands of its users.
