Eindhoven University of Technology Faces Major Cyberattack, Impacting Educational Operations

Eindhoven University of Technology Hit by Cyberattack, Lectures Suspended

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has been struck by a significant cyberattack, leading to the suspension of all lectures and educational activities. The attack, detected on Sunday evening, January 12, 2025, prompted the university to take immediate action by shutting down its computer network to prevent further damage.

As a precaution, TU/e’s network-bound systems—including essential services like email, Wi-Fi, and online platforms—have been rendered inaccessible for both students and staff. The university announced that this closure will remain in effect at least until Monday, January 13, creating serious disruptions for educational activities as the institution approaches the end of its teaching term.

Patrick Groothuis, vice president of TU/e, acknowledged the challenges posed by the shutdown. “This necessary intervention was done to prevent worse outcomes,” he stated, assuring that a team of ICT experts is diligently investigating the attack and working to restore functionality as quickly as possible.

The proximity of TU/e to ASML Holding NV, a major player in the global semiconductor industry, raises further concerns about the implications of the cyberattack. While investigations are ongoing, initial reports indicate that there has been no indication of data theft.

Despite the compromised network, the physical campus remains operational, allowing access to buildings. However, the situation has led to some service interruptions, including a temporary shutdown of the parking system and limited access to canteen facilities.

TU/e advises all community members to remain vigilant against potential phishing scams in the aftermath of this incident and has set up a dedicated emergency contact line for urgent inquiries. As the investigation continues, the university remains committed to providing updates, with a hopeful aim to restore normal operations by Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
