New Delhi/Mexico City: A recent military operation in Mexico has led to significant unrest following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” a prominent figure in organized crime. This incident has prompted advisories from both India and the United States, urging citizens to stay indoors in affected areas amid escalating violence.

Operation in Tapalpa: The Raid That Killed El Mencho

El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was cornered during a coordinated security operation in the Tapalpa region of Jalisco state. Acting on crucial intelligence, security forces attempted to apprehend him, which resulted in a fierce shootout as members of the cartel retaliated with heavy fire. While four cartel members were killed in the clash, Oseguera suffered critical injuries and died during an airlift for medical assistance. Additionally, three soldiers were injured during the confrontation.

Authorities have characterized this operation as one of the most significant blows to drug cartels in nearly ten years, drawing comparisons to the 2016 arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Violent Backlash Spreads Across Five States

The news of El Mencho’s death triggered an immediate surge of retaliatory violence across Mexico. Reports indicate that buses and trucks were set ablaze and roadblocks erected in various locations. Particularly severe unrest was reported in Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city, leading to school closures and stay-at-home advisories for residents.

The violence has reportedly spread to at least five states, compelling neighboring Guatemala to enhance border security measures. Additional military forces have been dispatched to strategic highways and sensitive areas throughout Mexico to restore order and prevent further escalation.

Global Bounty and CJNG’s International Reach

El Mencho had a hefty $15 million bounty placed on his head by U.S. authorities, reflecting his status as one of the most wanted criminals on international watch lists. He was implicated in the global trafficking of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, with operations extending well beyond Mexico into North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.

Who Was El Mencho

The 59-year-old had been entangled in organized crime for over 30 years. His criminal story began with an arrest in the U.S. in 1994 on charges related to heroin trafficking, after which he served time before returning to Mexico. By 2009, he founded the CJNG, which rapidly became one of Mexico’s most formidable and violent drug cartels.

Under his leadership, the CJNG has been linked to large-scale drug trafficking, illegal arms trading, extortion, and human smuggling. The group’s notoriety soared in 2015 when operatives shot down a Mexican military helicopter, highlighting their increasing firepower and capabilities.

U.S. Pressure and Intelligence Sharing

This military operation came at a time of growing pressure from Washington on Mexico to take decisive action against cartels. Officials have confirmed that cooperation and intelligence sharing between U.S. and Mexican authorities significantly contributed to the mission’s success.

In light of the escalating violence, the Indian Embassy in Mexico has advised its citizens in regions like Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Tamaulipas, and Nuevo León to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The U.S. State Department has issued similar warnings to American nationals.

Power Vacuum and Security Uncertainty Ahead

Experts express concern that the death of such a major cartel leader may lead to intense internal power struggles, heightening the potential for further violence. The CJNG’s operations span more than half of Mexico’s states, alongside a substantial international presence, indicating a possible leadership struggle ahead.

While Mexican security forces are actively working to restore order, analysts note that dismantling such an expansive criminal network will take considerable time and effort. Attention is now focused on who might fill the leadership void left by El Mencho and whether the current wave of violence will continue or begin to abate.

Although the elimination of El Mencho is viewed as a significant success in Mexico’s protracted battle against drug trafficking, the violence that has followed underscores the persistent challenges posed by organized crime in the nation.
