Authorities Uncover Nationwide Drug Network in New Zealand

Operation Solana: A Major Police Investigation

New Zealand police have launched a significant investigation, dubbed Operation Solana, targeting a nationwide drug importation and distribution network linked to dark web activities. This extensive nine-month operation, spearheaded by the National Organised Crime Group, has focused on the trafficking of substances such as methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, and ketamine.

Arrests and Drug Seizures

In a coordinated effort, police executed 16 search warrants across Auckland and Hamilton, resulting in the arrests of 11 individuals over a recent Thursday and Friday. During these operations, law enforcement officials seized notable quantities of illegal drugs, approximately $500,000 in cash, and three firearms, including a 3D-printed weapon.

Dark Web Tactics

Authorities allege that the criminal syndicate operated via dark web marketplaces, utilizing encrypted messaging applications and cryptocurrency to mask their identities and financial activities. Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Hunt noted that the investigation commenced following inquiries that linked the local syndicate to anonymous online platforms for their illicit dealings.

“This group is believed to have imported and distributed controlled substances across the country,” he explained, emphasizing the reach of the operation.

International Collaboration

Investigators revealed that the drugs were sourced from various countries, including the UK, Europe, and the United States. Additionally, New Zealand Customs, in collaboration with international law enforcement agencies such as those from the US and the Australian Border Force, intercepted over 200 kg of controlled substances falling into the hands of this syndicate at international borders.

During the recent search warrants, further quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, and ketamine were also seized, highlighting the extensive nature of this operation.

The 11 suspects arrested, aged between 24 and 42, are expected to appear in the Auckland District and Hamilton District Courts. They are facing multiple charges, including the importation, possession, and supply of Class A, B, and C controlled drugs, as well as unlawful firearm possession and participation in an organized criminal group.

Police Commitment to Addressing Online Drug Crimes

Detective Hunt remarked that Operation Solana underscores the commitment of New Zealand police to enhance their capabilities in uncovering and disrupting illegal activities occurring within online and encrypted environments.

“Offending on the dark web is not invisible,” he asserted, reinforcing the message that law enforcement agencies are vigilant and capable of tracking down those engaging in illegal drug transactions online.

Hunt further added, “These arrests send a clear message: If you are importing or dealing drugs through the dark web, we will find you, and we will hold you accountable.” This declaration highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to maintain safety and order within their communities while adapting to emerging digital threats.
