A Summer of Learning

SCRANTON, Pa.—At The University of Scranton, O’Hara Hall buzzed with activity this summer as a group of students from various parts of the country participated in the Cyber and AI Investigation Camp. These participants immersed themselves in the intricacies of cybersecurity, engaging in real-world problem-solving and developing essential skills in digital defense.

Students’ Enthusiasm and Expectations

Austin Yourek, a Delaware resident, expressed his initial hesitation mixed with excitement about venturing into cybersecurity. "I didn’t really know what to expect because I haven’t taken many cybersecurity courses, so I was looking forward to a new experience," he shared. This sentiment reflects the curiosity and eagerness among many students navigating the field of cybersecurity for the first time.

Expert Guidance

Leading the camp is Associate Professor Charles Sinchul Back, who heads the university’s Department of Cyber Crime & Homeland Security. With significant real-world experience, Back focuses on equipping students with knowledge and skills similar to those utilized by law enforcement in cybersecurity. He emphasized the dynamic nature of digital defense, stating, "This year is special because we just adopted all the trends, and also it’s an important era of AI and robotics."

Hands-On Learning Experiences

Throughout the camp, students worked on practical tasks, including Bridget Huxley, who gathered data on a hacker involved in illegally downloading sensitive information. Her enthusiasm for learning about cybersecurity was evident: "Now I got into all this. I’m like, how do computers work? How does cybersecurity work? It’s so cool to see how all these devices come together in such intricate ways to keep us safe."

Exploring the Dark Side of the Web

The camp provided a diverse range of experiences, not limited to coding and data analysis. Alexia Stampp from Queens had the unique opportunity to explore the dark web, which presented its own set of challenges. "The dark web was kind of challenging for me because I didn’t know that it was so easily accessible and all the things that you could do on it," she remarked. This aspect of the camp highlights the importance of understanding both the potential and risks of digital spaces.

Lifelong Skills for All

While the intention may not be for every student to pursue a career in cybersecurity, Professor Back aims for participants to take valuable lessons back to their daily lives. He stated, "I hope they become defenders to protect themselves and their families, as well as contribute to their communities." This perspective reinforces the idea that the skills learned in the camp can foster a more informed and vigilant society.

Future Growth in Cybersecurity Education

Looking ahead, The University of Scranton plans to expand its criminal justice and cybersecurity curriculum as these programs transition to the modern Weiss Hall for the upcoming academic year. This development reflects the growing emphasis on cybersecurity education in response to the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the field.

As technology continues to evolve, the University remains dedicated to providing its students with relevant education and training, ensuring they are equipped for the challenges of the digital age.
