UAE Estate Planning Enters Digital Transformation Era

The UAE is witnessing a significant shift in estate planning as the traditionally complex process begins to embrace digital transformation. Anton Pirinen, Founder and CEO of Blanket, emphasizes that the demand for faster and more accessible digital experiences is reshaping how residents protect their assets and secure their families’ futures. Despite advancements in accessing government, banking, and utility services, estate planning has lagged behind, often perceived as complicated and time-consuming.

Pirinen notes, “We live in an era where almost everything is digital. In the UAE, we are said to spend more than eight hours a day online, with technology shaping everything we do.” He highlights that while tasks like renewing a visa or settling a utility bill can be done in minutes, estate planning remains cumbersome, leaving many without their affairs properly organized.

Bridging the Digital Divide

According to Pirinen, the gap between the seamless digital experiences residents expect and the cumbersome estate-planning journey has created a barrier. “This isn’t because people don’t care about putting these plans in place, but more likely because the process itself has been the barrier,” he explains. The complexity of estate planning, especially for those with assets across multiple jurisdictions, has historically involved lengthy procedures and legal complexities that feel out of sync with modern expectations.

“UAE residents are used to an incredibly high standard of service, supported by the forward-thinking and ambitious digital strategies the country’s leadership has put in place,” Pirinen adds. He believes there is a real opportunity to modernize succession planning, making it simpler and more efficient.

Innovative Solutions for Modern Needs

Pirinen’s experience as a lawyer and a founding member of Wio Bank has informed his vision for Blanket. He aims to merge legal expertise with a streamlined customer journey, addressing the needs of a diverse population of expats in the UAE. “When so much else in our lives can be managed at the click of a button, there was a clear need to bring that same thinking to estate planning,” he states.

Blanket’s platform allows UAE residents to complete an assessment in about 10 to 15 minutes, with a human specialist reviewing the generated will before registration. This contrasts sharply with the traditional process, which often involved multiple meetings and extensive paperwork. The platform also features the Blanket Vault, a secure space for storing important documents and sharing information with designated individuals.

Pirinen believes that technology not only simplifies the process but also encourages individuals to engage with estate planning. “The barrier was never that people didn’t understand the need to take care of their affairs; it was that the process often asked too much of them before they had even started,” he explains.

As the UAE continues to advance its digital ambitions, estate planning is increasingly becoming part of this narrative. “What was once a time-consuming and often complex process is becoming far easier to navigate,” Pirinen concludes, highlighting the importance of making these critical life decisions more accessible.
