USA – The Coca-Cola Company has announced that its dairy subsidiary Fairlife has resumed most production across its four US facilities following a ransomware attack. The attack led to a temporary suspension of production earlier this month, affecting part of Fairlife’s systems. Coca-Cola has confirmed that an unauthorized third party obtained certain data during the incident, raising concerns about data security.
According to reporting by Dairy Business MEA, the company is currently conducting an investigation and assessment of the incident’s impact with the help of external advisors and cybersecurity experts. Law enforcement has also been notified, although the full scope and nature of the incident remain unclear.
Impact on Production and Product Safety
Despite the ransomware attack, Coca-Cola has stated that product quality and safety have not been compromised. However, production operations at Fairlife in the United States were temporarily halted. Notably, Fairlife’s production operations in Canada have not been affected by the incident.
The company has indicated that retail availability of Fairlife products remains largely unaffected due to existing inventory levels. They have reassured consumers that the incident has not impacted product quality or safety.
Financial Implications
Based on the information currently available, Coca-Cola does not expect the ransomware attack to have a material impact on its financial position or operating results. Fairlife has been a significant part of Coca-Cola’s strategy to diversify beyond traditional soda products, with a reported investment of US$7 billion in the brand.
Fairlife has gained popularity in health and fitness circles, particularly for its ultra-filtered milk products, which offer higher protein content and are lactose-free. Retail sales for Fairlife surged from an estimated US$90 million in 2015 to over US$1 billion in 2022, according to a Bloomberg report.
Future Developments
Coca-Cola’s Chief Executive Officer, James Quincey, has emphasized the importance of Fairlife in the company’s ongoing strategy to evolve consumer trends and diversify its product offerings. As investigations continue, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the situation for any further developments.
