Operation Grayskull: A Major Crackdown on Dark Web Child Exploitation
Federal authorities recently unveiled the outcomes of Operation Grayskull, an extensive investigation aimed at dismantling several notorious dark web platforms used for sharing horrific images and videos of child sexual abuse. This operation not only captures the attention of law enforcement agencies worldwide but also underscores a significant move against online child exploitation networks.
Notable Convictions and Sentences
The operation has already resulted in 18 convictions across the United States. Those convicted have received sentences totaling over 300 years in federal prison, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Among the most notable offenders is Thomas Peter Katsampes, a 52-year-old from Eagan, Minnesota, who has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison along with a lifetime of supervised release.
Katsampes’s journey started as a mere browser on one of the dark web sites but eventually escalated to a leadership position where he moderated the platform, enforced posting rules, and coached other users on evading law enforcement. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $23,000 in restitution to victims connected to the investigation.
Disturbing Nature of the Operations
The websites managed by Katsampes and his accomplices are described as some of the darkest sectors of the internet. Alarmingly, some of these sites specifically focused on the abuse of infants and toddlers. In response to these heinous acts, the FBI, in collaboration with various international law enforcement agencies, has successfully infiltrated, monitored, and fully dismantled this alarming segment of online predators.
FBI Director Kash Patel remarked on the significance of this operation, stating: "This operation represents one of the most significant strikes ever made against online child exploitation networks. We’ve not only dismantled dangerous platforms on the dark web, but we’ve also brought key perpetrators to justice."
Additional Sentences and Key Figures Involved
In addition to Katsampes, eight other individuals in Florida were sentenced, most of whom played essential roles in managing and maintaining the largest of the now-defunct child abuse sites. Among them, William Michael Spearman from Madison, Alabama, received a life sentence in federal prison for his involvement in what prosecutors labeled as a child exploitation enterprise.

- Gregory Malcolm Good (Silver Springs, Nevada): Over 25 years

- Matthew Branden Garrell (Raleigh, North Carolina): Nearly 21 years
- Keith David McIntosh (Grand Rapids, Michigan): 55 years
- Joseph Robert Stewart (Milton, Washington): Nearly 24 years
- Robert Preston Boyles (Clarksville, Tennessee): Over 23 years
International Cooperation and Further Developments
The scope of Operation Grayskull extended well beyond the United States, leading to arrests and site shutdowns in several countries including the U.K., Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Estonia, and South Africa. Additionally, two suspects were reported deceased before they could face charges related to the abuse sites.
Closer to home, Richard Smith from Dallas, Texas, received a sentence of 14 years in federal prison, while David Craig from Houston was sentenced to nine years for his involvement.
A Powerful Message Against Exploitation
Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti emphasized the importance of this operation for both law enforcement and the public, stating: "Today’s announcement sends a clear warning to those who exploit and abuse children: you will not find safe haven, even on the dark web. These offenders thought that they could act without consequences, but they were wrong."
The successful outcomes of Operation Grayskull serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing global efforts to combat child exploitation and bring perpetrators to justice, showcasing the collaborative approach necessary to dismantle such deeply entrenched networks.
