Research Reveals 166 Domains Exploiting 2024 Olympic Games for Financial Scams

Research conducted by BforeAI has uncovered a concerning trend of DNS abuse leading up to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. A total of 166 unique domains were identified, displaying signs of malicious activity that allowed threat actors to carry out financial scams.

The report highlighted various tactics used by cybercriminals, such as keyword stuffing, typosquatting, and the use of unconventional top-level domains (TDLs) like .xyz, .win, and .shop. These tactics were employed to deceive users into believing they were interacting with legitimate Olympic-related websites.

One particularly alarming discovery was the presence of counterfeit Olympic shop domains, including parisolympics2024.store and shop-olympics.shop. These fraudulent websites not only sold fake merchandise and tickets but also aimed to harvest personal and financial information from unsuspecting visitors.

In addition to financial scams, the report also shed light on cryptocurrency schemes leveraging the popularity of the Olympic Games. Scam coins were marketed using branding associated with the event, posing a significant risk to investors who fell victim to these fraudulent schemes.

As high-profile events continue to attract cybercriminals, it is crucial for individuals to exercise caution when interacting with online platforms. By staying vigilant and relying on official sources for event-related information, users can protect themselves from falling prey to malicious actors seeking to exploit their personal and financial data.

The BforeAI report emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring of malicious domains and encourages proactive measures to combat cyber threats surrounding globally critical events. By raising awareness and promoting cybersecurity best practices, individuals can safeguard themselves against online scams and fraudulent activities.
