Dark Web Blackmail Case: College Student Harassed by Ex-Partner

Incident Overview

In a distressing turn of events in Kolkata, a call center employee has reportedly gone into hiding after being accused of blackmailing a woman and selling intimate photos of her on the dark web. This alarming incident unfolded after the man, who is said to have been married to the woman for just a day, began harassing her once she returned home to her parents.

Nature of the Allegations

The complainant, a college student, filed a First Information Report (FIR) detailing the harassment she endured. She has accused her ex-partner of making threats to share the photographs with her family and friends, amplifying the emotional distress she has been facing. According to the complaint, the harassment did not stop at online threats; it included menacing phone calls at odd hours and unannounced visits to her home late at night, where he allegedly issued threats that ranged from verbal abuse to physical harm.

Escalation of Harassment

The situation escalated significantly when the accused supposedly uploaded private photographs of the couple to social media, using various aliases. Disturbingly, he attempted to auction these images online. The woman became aware of this breach when a friend alerted her to the presence of the photos, prompting her to seek help from the authorities.

In her statement, she mentioned that the accused aggressively confronted her family members in public, further adding to her sense of vulnerability. “He is extremely abusive and has been stalking me both online and offline,” she laments, highlighting the pervasive nature of her distress.

Police Investigation

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter, examining all possible leads to apprehend the suspect. A police official stated, “We are using technical leads to nab him,” suggesting that they are employing digital tools to track down the whereabouts of the accused.

In light of the rising incidents of cyber harassment and online stalking, local law enforcement has proactively encouraged citizens to remain vigilant. They released a brief educational video outlining essential steps for personal safety against such threats. Furthermore, they have urged victims to reach out for assistance, with a dedicated helpline (1930) available for those in need of counseling or guidance.

Conclusion

This incident is a stark reminder of the risks associated with sharing personal information in the digital age. As the police work to resolve the case, it serves as a call to action for both the public and law enforcement to reinforce protective measures against cyber harassment, ensuring that victims feel safe and supported.
