Florida’s Department of Education (FLDOE) has reported a significant data breach affecting nearly 5 million individuals who applied for financial aid in the state. The breach, which was discovered on October 19, exposed sensitive information including Social Security numbers, addresses, and other personal details, prompting immediate action from state authorities.
The FLDOE confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed a database containing personal information of applicants. In response, the department has taken the financial aid website offline and is collaborating with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to manage the incident. Despite the breach, the department assured that financial aid disbursements, scholarships, grants, and student loans remain unaffected.
In a statement, the FLDOE emphasized the importance of monitoring credit reports and financial accounts for any unusual activity among those impacted. However, the department has not disclosed specific details regarding the nature of the attack or the identity of the attackers, stating only that the incident has been contained and reported to the Office of the Attorney General.
This breach follows a troubling trend in Florida, as it marks the second major government data breach this year. Just last month, the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles reported a breach linked to a prominent hacking group, which has since been offering stolen data for sale on cybercriminal forums. Additionally, another central Florida county is currently grappling with significant internet outages following an alleged cyberattack.
The FLDOE’s proactive measures and collaboration with law enforcement highlight the ongoing challenges faced by state agencies in safeguarding sensitive information. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the security of personal data and preventing future incidents.
