Major Ganja Trafficking Bust in Bengaluru: Software Engineer at the Center

Overview of the Investigation

On December 31, 2025, Bengaluru authorities unveiled a major breakthrough in their battle against narcotics trafficking. Investigators arrested Gade Renuka, a 28-year-old software engineer, who stands accused of spearheading a significant interstate and international ganja trafficking operation. This case marks a notable point of concern for law enforcement agencies, being the first documented instance of cannabis being trafficked from the Andhra–Odisha region to Sri Lanka.

The Arrest and Immediate Actions

The operation leading to Renuka’s capture unfolded after law enforcement received actionable intelligence regarding her activities. Multiple police teams moved quickly, intercepting a vehicle near Suryakailasa in Nathavaram. The search yielded an impressive seizure of 74 kilograms of high-quality ‘Sheelavathi’ strain ganja, along with several vehicles, thus revealing the extent of the trafficking network.

Understanding the Network’s Operations

Renuka, along with her associate Surya Kailash, allegedly orchestrated the movement of ganja sourced from tribal areas in Odisha, including Balimela and Chitrakonda, both recognized for high-potency cannabis cultivation. They established a logistics hub in Narsipatnam, which served as a base for storage, packaging, and onward distribution of the illicit cargo.

To navigate law enforcement scrutiny effectively, the group employed middlemen for discreet transportation and directed drivers to utilize routes that evaded police checkpoints. This level of planning indicates a well-oiled machine working behind the scenes.

The Trafficking Route: From Land to Sea

According to investigators, once the ganja arrived in Tamil Nadu via the Rajapalayam highway, it was repackaged into smaller units for distribution. Notably, the gang developed connections with marine smugglers, which enabled them to ship the drugs to Sri Lanka, thereby extending the operation’s reach on an international scale.

Profiling the Alleged Ringleader: Gade Renuka

Gade Renuka’s background as a software engineer in Bengaluru contributed to her ability to design and manage this criminal enterprise effectively. Hailing from the Vizianagaram district, her technical skills assisted in structuring the trafficking network. Her notable influence in the supply chain of the Sheelavathi strain led to her being dubbed the ‘Lady Don’ among her associates, reflecting her dominance in the area.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are concentrating on tracing financial transactions and international connections that could reveal additional layers to the operation. The focus now shifts to uncovering how revenues generated from this illicit trade were laundered and pinpointing individuals in Sri Lanka who played a role in facilitating the final stages of trafficking.

Anticipation of Further Arrests

Sources within the police department suggest that the current arrests may only scratch the surface of a more extensive network. With ongoing analysis of digital devices, call logs, and established transport routes, more arrests are anticipated. This case underscores a growing concern regarding organized crime syndicates that utilize professional backgrounds and technical acumen to shield their illegal undertakings.

A Significant Step Forward

The successful bust of this trafficking operation stands as a pivotal moment in the fight against organized narcotics crime, revealing how deeply intertwined such operations can be with legitimate professions. As law enforcement agencies continue to dissect this case, they hope to dismantle the network further and reduce the prevalence of drug trafficking across state and international borders.
