Patanjali Foods Recalls Red Chilli Powder Over Pesticide Concerns

In a significant move that underscores its commitment to consumer safety, Patanjali Foods Ltd has announced the recall of four tonnes of its red chilli powder. This decision comes in response to directives from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which revealed that the product exceeded permissible pesticide residue limits.

The specific batch, labeled AJD2400012, was found to be non-compliant with the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues) Regulations, 2011. Sanjeev Asthana, CEO of Patanjali Foods, confirmed the findings and emphasized the company’s proactive measures. "We are taking this matter seriously and have initiated a complete recall while informing our distribution channels," he stated. The company has also launched advertisements to alert consumers who may have purchased the affected chilli powder.

Consumers are being urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. “The value and volume of the recalled product are very small,” Asthana highlighted, assuring the public that this incident is isolated and under control.

In light of the recall, Patanjali is reinforcing its quality control measures and reassessing its agricultural supply chain to prevent future issues. Asthana assured customers of the company’s dedication to maintaining high-quality standards and compliance with industry regulations.

The FSSAI’s intervention in this matter emphasizes its critical role in safeguarding food safety across India. As a prominent player in the FMCG sector, Patanjali’s swift response may set a precedent for food safety protocols within the industry.

Despite the setback, Patanjali Foods reported robust financial performance, with a 21% increase in net profit in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, reflecting its ongoing growth trajectory amidst challenges.
