FTC Report: Social Media and Video Streaming Services Engage in Vast Surveillance of Consumers

A recent Federal Trade Commission (FTC) staff report has revealed alarming data collection and use practices by major social media and video streaming services. The report found that companies like Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok engaged in vast surveillance of consumers to monetize their personal information while failing to adequately protect users online, particularly children and teens.

The report highlighted how companies collected and retained extensive amounts of data, including information from data brokers and both users and non-users of their platforms. It also pointed out that many companies engaged in broad data sharing practices with inadequate data handling controls and oversight.

Furthermore, the staff report emphasized that the business models of these companies incentivized mass collection of user data for targeted advertising, which raised serious privacy concerns. The report also noted the use of privacy-invasive tracking technologies to facilitate advertising based on user preferences and interests.

Additionally, the report raised concerns about the lack of protection for children and teens on these platforms, citing negative impacts on young users’ mental health. It also highlighted the potential competition implications of companies amassing significant amounts of user data, leading to market dominance and limited consumer choices.

Based on their findings, the staff report made recommendations for policymakers and companies, including passing comprehensive federal privacy legislation, implementing data minimization and retention policies, and providing greater privacy protections for teens. The report emphasized the need for companies to prioritize user privacy and transparency in their data practices to address the growing concerns surrounding data collection and use by social media and video streaming services.
