Bengaluru experienced a shocking and meticulously planned heist on Wednesday afternoon that mirrored something straight from a movie. A group of well-organized criminals, posing as officials from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), intercepting an ATM cash van and escaping with an incredible ₹7 crore in cash in less than half an hour. The precision of the operation has raised significant concerns about potential internal security breaches and lapses.
The Sequence of Events Behind the ₹7 Crore Heist
The audacious incident unfolded around 12:24 PM near the Ashok Pillar Junction. A cash van operated by CMS had just collected ₹7.11 crore from the HDFC currency chest located in JP Nagar and was en route to replenish various ATMs throughout the city.
During this critical moment, an SUV emblazoned with a “Government of India” sticker abruptly blocked the cash van’s path. Five to six individuals emerged from the vehicle, confidently identifying themselves as RBI officials. They summoned the cash van crew under the pretense of conducting a routine inspection of documents.
In a swift move, the impersonators forced the cash custodian and two armed security personnel into an alternate vehicle while instructing the cash van’s driver to continue along the route. Reports indicate that at least one member of the gang was armed with a pistol, which they used to intimidate the driver into compliance.
Upon reaching the Dairy Circle flyover, the gang instructed the driver to stop. In a calculated maneuver, they transferred all cash trunks into their own vehicles before making their getaway. They also removed the DVR from the cash van, eliminating any potential CCTV evidence that could aid investigators.
Karnataka Home Minister, Dr. G. Parameshwara, referred to the heist as “one of the most unique and troubling occurrences in recent memory.” Bengaluru Police Commissioner S. M. Shekar Singh confirmed that over 50 CCTV footage clips are currently under review.
