A preparatory committee for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) central bank governors convened virtually to enhance regional cooperation on payment systems, banking supervision, financial technology, and cybersecurity. This sixth meeting, chaired by Hesa Abdulla Al Sada, Executive Director of Central Banking and Macro-Prudential Oversight at the Central Bank of Bahrain, underscores the GCC’s commitment to strengthening its financial infrastructure.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The meeting, held under Bahrain’s presidency of the 46th session of the GCC, included representatives from all member states. Khalid bin Ali Al Sunaidi, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Development Affairs at the GCC General Secretariat, also participated. In her opening remarks, Al Sada emphasized the critical role of the Preparatory Committee in fostering joint cooperation among GCC central banks, aligning with the directives and recommendations of the central bank governors.

Focus on Cybersecurity and Financial Resilience

During the discussions, the committee reviewed various recommendations from GCC committees and working groups, particularly those related to payment systems and banking sector supervision. A significant focus was placed on mechanisms for sharing cybersecurity information pertinent to the banking sector. This initiative aims to bolster the resilience of financial systems across the region, addressing the growing need for robust cybersecurity measures in the face of evolving threats.

Combating Financial Crimes

Additionally, the committee explored collaborative efforts among GCC member states to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. The emphasis on sharing expertise and developing comprehensive policies reflects a proactive approach to enhancing the security and integrity of the financial landscape in the Gulf region.

This meeting marks a pivotal step in the GCC’s ongoing efforts to fortify its financial systems against cyber threats and improve cooperation in fintech initiatives. For more details, see the report from Reuters.
