Global Talent Summit Week Strengthens Hong Kong’s Position as a High-Tech Hub for Global Talent

HONG KONG SAR – The Global Talent Summit Week (GTS Week), co-hosted by the Labour and Welfare Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Hong Kong Talent Engage (HKTE), has emerged as a pivotal event in Hong Kong’s strategy to position itself as a high-tech hub for global talent. Held from March 18 to March 29, 2026, the summit featured two flagship events—the International Talent Forum and the CareerConnect Expo—drawing over 10,000 participants and achieving 170,000 live-stream views.

Keynote Insights from Nobel Laureate

Among the prominent speakers was Professor Christopher A. Pissarides, a Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences. In his keynote address, he highlighted Hong Kong’s robust strengths in traditional sectors such as finance and commerce, alongside its world-class education system. He noted that the rapid technological advancements in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), particularly its proximity to Shenzhen—a hub for innovation hardware and industrial artificial intelligence (AI)—position Hong Kong favorably to evolve into a regional high-tech center.

Professor Pissarides stated, “Hong Kong possesses a vibrant service-based economy, a high-quality talent pool, proactive government policies, and a thriving entrepreneurial culture. These strengths define Hong Kong’s unique role within the GBA and will be key to its continued ability to attract international talent.” He emphasized that AI should serve as a complementary tool to enhance productivity and employee well-being, rather than replace human labor.

Hong Kong’s Strategic Vision for Talent Development

Chief Executive Mr. John Lee officiated the opening ceremony of GTS Week, emphasizing Hong Kong’s ascent as an international talent hub. He noted that this growth is driven by a comprehensive strategy that integrates talent development with economic transformation, technological advancement, and regional cooperation. According to the International Institute for Management Development’s World Talent Ranking 2025, Hong Kong has risen to fourth globally and first in Asia.

Mr. Lee affirmed that Hong Kong will maintain its openness, deepen international engagement, and align closely with national development strategies. He stated, “While economic indicators and technological achievements are important, human development remains the ultimate goal, and Hong Kong will continue to place people at the center of its vision for the future.”

Fostering International Collaboration and Innovation

The GTS Week serves as a platform for fostering international talent collaboration and showcasing diverse development opportunities. It includes discussions on the integrated development of education, technology, and talent, featuring industry leaders such as Mr. Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, CEO of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, and Mr. Joe Ngai, Chairman of McKinsey & Company Greater China. They discussed the evolving demand for skilled professionals and how innovation is reshaping talent development in China.

Panel discussions during the forum brought together experts like Professor Gong Qihuang, President of Peking University; Dr. Lin Dahua, Co-founder and Chief Scientist of SenseTime Group Limited; and Ms. Ruchee Anand, Vice President of Talent Solutions at LinkedIn. They explored the emerging talent ecosystem and the importance of cross-border collaboration in nurturing future-ready talent.

Government Initiatives and Talent Admission Measures

During GTS Week, HKTE welcomed around 100 government representatives from the Chinese Mainland and the Macao SAR, alongside delegates from leading universities. They shared valuable insights on talent attraction, retention, and recruitment strategies aligned with the National 15th Five-Year Plan. The HKSAR Government has recently implemented a series of talent admission measures aimed at attracting global talent to develop their careers in Hong Kong.

A significant aspect of this year’s GTS Week was the CareerConnect Expo, which brought together approximately 70 corporations, educational institutions, and government departments. The Expo showcased Hong Kong’s latest talent admission policies, industry information, and career prospects across the GBA.

Expanding Opportunities for Global Talent

GTS Week will continue until March 29, featuring nine satellite events, including regional conferences, career fairs, and corporate award ceremonies. These initiatives aim to establish a comprehensive platform for professional networking and information exchange. A notable collaboration was formed between HKTE and Junior Chamber International Hong Kong (JCIHK), leveraging JCIHK’s network of over 150,000 young leaders across 114 countries to invite global talent to explore opportunities in Hong Kong and the GBA.

Building on the success of its inaugural edition in 2024, this year’s GTS Week has expanded into a series of events focused on the integrated development of education, technology, and talent. This follows Hong Kong’s historic rise to the top position in Asia in the IMD World Talent Ranking 2025, underscoring its strong appeal to global talent.
