Google to Discontinue Dark Web Monitoring Tool in 2026

In a recent announcement, Google confirmed that it will be shutting down its dark web report feature in February 2026. This comes less than two years after the tool was introduced, aimed at helping users keep track of whether their personal information has been compromised on the dark web.

Key Dates for Users to Note

The dark web monitoring scans will be halted on January 15, 2026. Following this date, the feature will officially be reinstated on February 16, 2026. After this date, all data related to the dark web reports will be deleted. Google has made it clear that users who want to delete their monitoring profile beforehand can do so through a straightforward process.

How to Delete Your Dark Web Monitoring Profile

For those who wish to remove their monitoring profile before the feature is officially retired, here are the steps to follow:

  • Visit the Dark Web report page.
  • In the section titled “Results with your info,” select “Edit monitoring profile.”
  • At the bottom, click on “Delete monitoring profile” and then confirm by clicking “Delete.”

Why the Change?

Launched in March 2023, the dark web report was intended to combat identity theft that arises from data breaches. Users received prompts when their personal data—such as their name, address, email, phone number, and Social Security number—was detected on the dark web. Despite its initial promise, Google acknowledged in their support document that the tool provided limited actionable next steps for users. This feedback prompted the decision to focus on developing more effective means for individuals to safeguard their online information.

Expanding Access and Enhancing Security

In July 2024, Google broadened access to the dark web report by allowing all account holders, not just Google One subscribers, to utilize the service. This expansion aimed to reach a wider audience concerned about online security. However, the discontinuation indicates a shift back towards tools that offer tangible, actionable security measures.

User Privacy and Account Strengthening Recommendations

In light of this shutdown, Google is encouraging its users to take proactive steps in enhancing their account security. One recommendation includes setting up a passkey for multi-factor authentication (MFA), which is designed to be resistant to phishing attacks. Furthermore, Google advises users to remove personal information from their search results through the “Results about you” feature, allowing for better control over privacy and a polished online presence.
