The Growing Role of AI in Cybercrime

Analyzing AI’s Rise Among Cybercriminals

Cybersecurity firm Group-IB has recently delved into the dark underbelly of the internet, examining how artificial intelligence (AI) is being utilized by cybercriminals. Their investigations reveal a concerning trend: AI-powered tools and services are not just prevalent—they’re alarmingly accessible. Low prices enable operatives to tap into AI capabilities that can assist them in a range of criminal activities.

Affordable AI Solutions for Cybercriminals

For as little as $30, cybercriminals can gain access to unrestricted AI chatbots designed to help with various illegal endeavors. Group-IB’s report, Weaponized AI: Inside the Criminal Ecosystem Fueling the Fifth Wave of Cybercrime, highlights a significant shift in how AI is being integrated into the criminal toolkit. While previous waves of cybercrime leaned heavily on technical skills, the landscape has evolved; AI is now embedded as a core component of their operations.

The Emergence of DarkLLMs

Throughout dark web forums, discussions abound about “jailbreaking” popular large language models (LLMs) and the so-called DarkLLMs—unfettered AI models that can perform illicit tasks. Access to these DarkLLMs typically ranges from $30 to $200, making them a cost-effective option for many cybercriminals. One notable example is Nytheon AI, an unrestricted AI chatbot promoted on various dark web platforms. Group-IB found that as of April 2025, it was being sold via subscription on Telegram channels, with claims of providing essential services such as malware development and vulnerability research.

The Dangers of Deepfake Technology

Among the most alarming findings in the report is the advent of “deepfake-as-a-service.” Here, cybercriminals offer “synthetic identity kits,” complete with AI-generated video actors and cloned vocals. Priced as low as $5, these kits utilize audio samples as brief as ten seconds, harvested from social media and other online content. This makes the impersonation of individuals not just feasible but frighteningly simple.

Phishing Scams Getting an Upgrade

AI’s utility extends beyond deepfake technology; it is increasingly being used to enhance phishing strategies. Automated AI tools can craft highly convincing phishing emails, streamlining the malicious efforts of cybercriminals. While phishing is not a new tactic, the introduction of AI has accelerated its execution, leading to an anticipated rise in attacks.

The Industrialization of Cybercrime

Experts like Craig Jones, former director of Cybercrime at INTERPOL, assert that this rapid integration of AI into cybercriminal practices marks what he terms the industrialization of cybercrime. Tasks that once demanded skilled hackers and extensive time frameworks can now be executed rapidly and at scale. Although the motives behind cybercrime—such as financial gain, leverage, and unauthorized access—remain unchanged, the methods have become decidedly more sophisticated.

The Need for Collaboration in Cyber Defense

To combat this augmenting threat, experts advocate for deeper collaboration among intelligence communities and law enforcement agencies. The fight against AI-powered cybercrime requires coordinated efforts that transcend traditional barriers between the public and private sectors. As cybercriminals join forces to exploit technology, a united front is essential to safeguard against these burgeoning threats.

Though the challenges posed by AI in the realm of cybercrime are steep, understanding how these technologies are being misused is the first step toward effective mitigation strategies. By harnessing collaborative efforts and adapting to the evolving tactics of cybercriminals, we can work towards creating a safer digital landscape.
