Increase in State-Sponsored Cyberthreats: UK Cyber Resilience Report 2024

In a shocking revelation, a new report has shown that almost half of businesses in the UK have experienced an increase in state-sponsored cyberthreats in the past year. The findings, disclosed in the United Kingdom Cyber Resilience Report 2024 by Absolute Security, highlight the growing concern among enterprise organisations.

One of the most alarming incidents mentioned in the report was a Chinese-backed cyberattack on a tech supplier of the Ministry of Defence, compromising the personal information of thousands of servicemen and women, as well as veterans. This breach exposed sensitive data such as names, addresses, and even bank account details, raising serious questions about national security.

The survey of 250 UK Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) revealed that ransomware attacks were the biggest fear for these security leaders, with 69% expressing concerns about the financial impact of a successful breach on their organization. Additionally, 62% admitted they feared losing their job if their organization fell victim to a major cyberattack.

To combat these threats, CISOs are increasingly focusing on prevention rather than recovery strategies, with an emphasis on cyber-resilience training for the C-Suite. This proactive approach is crucial in today’s digital landscape, where cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated and pervasive.

Overall, the report underscores the importance of building a robust cyber-resilience strategy to safeguard against state-sponsored cyberthreats and ransomware attacks. With the ever-increasing volume and complexity of cyberattacks, organizations must prioritize cybersecurity and preparedness to ensure continuity and operational integrity in the face of escalating cyber risks.
