Investigation Unveils Fraud at Hilliard Addiction Center

Allegations Against a Former Employee

Authorities in Hilliard, Ohio, are delving into a significant case of identity theft linked to a former staff member of Evoke Wellness, a local addiction treatment center. This investigation has emerged after allegations surfaced that the individual sold sensitive patient data on the dark web, impacting at least 240 victims scattered across the nation.

Scope of the Incident

So far, police have confirmed the identities of 240 victims, with numerous cases originating from central Ohio. However, authorities believe that the true number of affected individuals may be much higher than currently known. As investigations progress, law enforcement is working diligently to uncover additional victims.

Employment Background

The suspect was employed at Evoke Wellness from November 2021 until July 2024. During this period, he allegedly exploited access to the center’s internal databases to extract confidential patient information. This included names, addresses, dates of birth, and social security numbers—data that could have severe implications for those affected.

Dark Web Transactions

Once he obtained this sensitive information, the former employee reportedly sold it on the dark web. Customers who bought this stolen data allegedly used it for various fraudulent purposes, such as purchasing vehicles, accumulating credit card charges in restaurants and hotels, and even buying cryptocurrency.

A Wider Scheme Uncovered

Moreover, police have indicated that the man may have used fake identification credentials to acquire electronics, including iPhones and tablets, which he then resold for profit. The breadth of this operation reflects a deliberate and calculated approach to identity theft.

Initial Discovery

The investigation began on October 10, 2024, following a traffic stop involving the suspect. During this encounter, officers uncovered four counterfeit Ohio driver’s licenses, 25 prepaid cards, numerous cell phones containing evidence linked to criminal activities, and a loaded handgun. At that time, he was charged with multiple offenses, including identity fraud and forgery.

Expanding the Investigation

As detectives continued their work, it became evident that the fraudulent activities were part of a larger network. A search warrant executed at the suspect’s home on May 9 revealed even more incriminating evidence, further extending the reach of the investigation.

Law Enforcement’s Response

“This is a disturbing situation of someone taking advantage of individuals while they were seeking rehabilitation during a vulnerable time in their lives,” commented Chief of Police Michael Woods. He has emphasized the department’s commitment to locating and assisting any additional victims before presenting the case to prosecutors.

Ongoing Efforts

As the investigation continues, law enforcement anticipates filing more charges as further evidence comes to light. The authorities are actively working to ensure justice for all affected parties, and they are encouraging anyone who might be a victim to come forward.

How to Report

Individuals who believe they may have been impacted by this incident are urged to reach out to Detective Crabtree at ccrabtree@hilliardohio.gov or by calling 614-334-2430. Law enforcement is eager to hear from anyone who might have crucial information or who suspects that they are a victim in this extensive identity theft case.

Awaiting Response from Evoke Wellness

Ten TV has made attempts to contact Evoke Wellness for a statement regarding this troubling situation and is awaiting a response. The organization’s role in this matter and its measures for patient data security are likely to be focal points as the investigation unfolds.
