AT&T Customers: Updated Deadline for Class Action Settlement

AT&T customers now have an extended deadline to claim their part in a significant class action settlement resulting from a data breach. Initially set for November 18, the deadline has been pushed back to December 18, providing more time for affected individuals to submit their claims.

Overview of the Data Breach Incident

The legal action stems from two separate data breaches that were reported on March 30 and July 12, 2024. These breaches affected a considerable number of customers, reportedly compromising the information of 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former account holders. The exposed data included sensitive details such as Social Security numbers, raising major privacy and security concerns.

AT&T’s Stance on the Allegations

While AT&T has not admitted to any wrongdoing regarding these incidents, the company announced it would settle the claims for $177 million. In a statement to USA TODAY, AT&T emphasized that they chose to settle in order to avoid the costs and uncertainties associated with lengthy litigation. The company remains committed to safeguarding customer data and rebuilding trust following the breaches.

Who Can Claim and How Much?

Customers affected by the breaches are eligible for various compensation options. Those uncertain about their eligibility can call 833-890-4930 for clarification. Many claimants should have already received notifications regarding their potential inclusion in the settlement.

For claims related to the March breach, individuals can receive up to $5,000 for documented losses occurring in 2019 or later. Claimants must provide either a receipt or financial documentation to substantiate their losses. Additionally, claims are categorized into tiers based on the sensitivity of the compromised information:

  • Tier 1: For those whose Social Security numbers were included, with payments amounting to five times the value of Tier 2 claims.
  • Tier 2: For those without Social Security numbers included in the breach.

For the July breach, affected customers can claim up to $2,500 for losses stemming from events occurring on or after April 14, 2024. Payments may be impacted by the total number of successful claims submitted.

Settlement Summary and Benefits

The total potential payout for customers who qualify under both incidents can reach up to $7,500. Furthermore, the settlement offers up to 24 months of credit monitoring to those impacted, aiming to provide some degree of financial security and assistance in mitigating risks of identity theft.
