IBM Unveils the z17 Mainframe: A Leap into the AI Era

In a groundbreaking announcement, IBM has introduced the IBM z17, the next generation of its storied mainframe technology, specifically engineered for the age of artificial intelligence. Set to revolutionize enterprise-scale AI, the z17 promises to enhance user experiences through innovative assistants and agents, marking a significant leap forward in computing capabilities.

Powered by the cutting-edge IBM Telum® II processor, the z17 expands beyond traditional transactional AI, enabling organizations to process an astounding 50% more AI inference operations daily compared to its predecessor, the z16. This advancement positions businesses to achieve real-time transaction scoring, unlocking a plethora of applications across various industries—from mitigating loan risks to enhancing medical image analysis.

The z17 is the culmination of five years of meticulous design and development, incorporating insights from over 100 clients and resulting in more than 300 patent applications. It introduces multi-model AI capabilities and robust security features, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected while leveraging AI to improve system usability.

“AI will only be as valuable as the infrastructure it runs on,” stated Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE. With the z17, IBM aims to integrate AI deeply into enterprise operations, enabling organizations to harness their vast data stores securely and efficiently.

Additionally, the IBM Spyre™ Accelerator, expected in late 2025, will further enhance AI capabilities, allowing businesses to run advanced generative AI applications directly on the mainframe.

The IBM z17 will be available starting June 18, 2025, heralding a new era of AI-driven innovation for enterprises worldwide. For more information, visit IBM.com/z17.
