India Ranks in Tier-1 Category in Global Cybersecurity Index 2024

India has claimed a prestigious spot in the Tier-1 category in the latest Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024, released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). With a rank of 98.49, India has been recognized as one of the leading nations demonstrating a strong commitment to robust cybersecurity practices.

The GCI evaluates countries across five key pillars: legal, technical, organizational, capacity development, and cooperation. In its fifth annual report, India stood out for its strong legal measures, technical prowess, and capacity building efforts in the cybersecurity domain.

India excelled in the legal pillar, with a robust framework of laws and regulations governing cybersecurity. The Information Technology Act (2000) and its subsequent amendments play a significant role in combating cybercrime, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring data privacy. The recent passage of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill (2022) further enhances India’s legal framework, providing increased safeguards for citizen data.

India’s technical capabilities also contributed to its Tier 1 ranking, with initiatives promoting secure infrastructure and technology adoption. The establishment of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and various government programs focusing on capacity building through training and awareness initiatives have been instrumental in this regard.

The GCI report emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in combating cyber threats. India has actively engaged in global efforts, collaborating with international organizations and other countries. Participation in forums like the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime and joint cybersecurity exercises with partner nations highlight India’s commitment to global cybersecurity initiatives.

While India’s ascent to Tier 1 is commendable, challenges persist in the ever-evolving cyber threat landscape. Bridging the digital divide, ensuring equitable access to cybersecurity resources, promoting cyber hygiene, and raising public awareness about online threats are key priorities moving forward.

India’s Tier 1 ranking presents an opportunity to build upon its achievements by continuously improving legal frameworks, investing in cutting-edge technology, and fostering a collaborative environment. Prioritizing cybersecurity will pave the way for a more secure and resilient digital future for India’s citizens and businesses.
