UNMISS Initiatives Improve Healthcare in Upper Nile State
Addressing Security Concerns
As security issues persist in parts of Upper Nile state, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is actively engaged in safeguarding civilians and rebuilding trust within communities. A notable recent effort was a two-day medical outreach organized by Indian Blue Helmets at the UN Protection of Civilians site near Malakal. This initiative successfully provided medical care to around 315 displaced individuals, offering them free treatment and consultations.
Healthcare Access for Displaced Individuals
The medical outreach allowed patients suffering from various health issues to receive prompt diagnoses and a range of treatment options. Dr. Sandeep Ravi, a medical peacekeeper involved in the mission, emphasized the importance of such initiatives. He stated that providing accessible healthcare is central to fostering a stable and lasting peace in South Sudan.
“Accessible and inclusive healthcare is key for communities to thrive,” Dr. Ravi noted. “The ongoing conflict in Upper Nile state has severely disrupted lives, livelihoods, and health facilities. We aimed to fill this gap, albeit temporarily, through our outreach.”
Impact on the Local Community
One of the patients, Mary Joseph, a 20-year-old resident of the area, shared her experience. “I’ve been struggling with a leg issue for three months but couldn’t afford treatment at the local clinics,” she said, visibly relieved. “Today, the doctors from India examined me thoroughly and provided medication to treat my condition. I’m hopeful that I can get back to my small business soon.”
Community leaders at the camp also recognized the significance of the medical outreach. Albino Amum, who helped coordinate the event, reflected on its timing and impact. “We previously relied on various international and NGO support for healthcare. However, with the reduction in funding, we have felt a considerable void. The initiative by UNMISS is timely and significant, and we hope they will consider extending such programs in the future to further assist those in need.”
Community Appreciation and Future Initiatives
Dr. Ravi expressed his fulfillment at the positive reception from the community members. “As medical professionals and peacekeepers, there’s no greater reward than the genuine appreciation we received from those we treated. This initiative highlights how collective action and compassion can make a substantial difference in public health,” he remarked.
This outreach not only provided necessary medical attention but also served as a reminder of the collaborative spirit needed to address health disparities in conflict-affected areas.
