Major Drug Trafficking Operation Exposed: Arrest of Kochi Resident

Arrest of Edison Babu

Law enforcement agencies have made a significant breakthrough in the battle against drug trafficking in India. Edison Babu, a 29-year-old resident of Muvattupuzha in the Ernakulam district, was apprehended for allegedly masterminding one of the country’s largest dark web drug operations.

The Criminal Enterprise

According to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Babu conducted over 700 transactions while using the online alias ‘Ketamelon.’ These sales involved the distribution of various narcotics across multiple states in India. Investigations suggest that between 2022 and 2024, he managed drug transactions valued between ₹5 crore and ₹10 crore.

Earlier this week, authorities took him into custody, where they seized significant quantities of narcotics and other items associated with his operations. The NCB recovered 1,127 LSD blotters and 131.66 grams of ketamine. Additionally, they confiscated cryptocurrency assets amounting to ₹70 lakh, along with a specialized hardware wallet and a laptop linked to his illegal activities.

Organized Operation Structure

The NCB’s investigation unveiled a sophisticated global supply chain utilizing the dark web. Here’s a closer look at how Edison Babu’s operation functioned:

Sourcing Drugs

Babu sourced LSD from an international network dubbed Dr. Soyuz, executing payments via cryptocurrency. This payment method provided a layer of anonymity, making it difficult for law enforcement to trace the funds.

Delivery Mechanism

The illicit drugs were shipped to India through international postal services. After arriving, the packages were dispatched to various buyers using domestic courier services, keeping customers oblivious to Babu’s identity and precise location.

Distribution Strategy

The drug deliveries targeted major cities, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Bhopal, Patna, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Babu employed a range of couriers and varied city addresses for each shipment, significantly complicating efforts to track the operation.

Detection and Arrest

Authorities became suspicious when customs officials observed three foreign mail parcels addressed to Babu. This prompted an immediate alert to the NCB and a more thorough investigation. Agents managed to trace digital footprints, decrypt codes from the dark web, and ultimately arrest Babu.

Understanding the Dark Web

The dark web represents a concealed segment of the internet that is inaccessible through standard web browsers like Google Chrome. Accessing this hidden realm requires specialized tools, such as the Tor browser, along with specific configurations to maintain privacy. The nature of transactions within the dark web is inherently secure and encrypted, posing a significant challenge for regulatory oversight and enforcement actions.

Conclusion

The arrest of Edison Babu marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking facilitated by dark web technologies. The case highlights the complexities of modern drug distribution networks and the lengths to which individuals will go to circumvent law enforcement agencies.
