Kyowon Group Cyberattack: Recent Breach Raises Alarms

The recent cyberattack on Kyowon Group marks yet another significant breach affecting South Korean companies, which have faced a series of high-profile incidents in recent weeks. As investigations continue into breaches involving major firms like KT and Lotte Card, the situation surrounding the Kyowon Group breach has sparked widespread concern, especially given the company’s large customer base and diverse subsidiary roster.

Detection and Immediate Response to the Breach

On January 10, Kyowon Group detected unusual signs of external intrusion early in the morning. Recognizing the potential threat, the company promptly initiated emergency measures, shutting down parts of its internal systems to contain the situation. The official acknowledgment of the incident came on January 11, when several of Kyowon Group’s websites became temporarily inaccessible.

Ongoing Service Disruptions

By January 12, users visiting Kyowon Group’s sites encountered notices informing them of service unavailability due to unforeseen disruptions. This indicated that the impact of the cyberattack was still being felt, further complicating access to online services associated with Kyowon Group and its subsidiaries.

Company Confirmation and Investigation

A representative from Kyowon Group confirmed the breach, noting that their investigation was in its early stages. The individual emphasized the importance of determining whether any personal information had been compromised. The company also indicated plans to issue an official statement the next day, shedding light on the developments as they unfolded.

Multiple Websites Affected as Recovery Efforts Persist

Further inquiries into the incident suggest a possible connection to ransomware. After detecting suspicious activities resembling a ransomware attack, Kyowon Group took swift actions to shut down sections of its internal network. Abnormal behaviors were first recorded around 8 a.m. on January 10, leading to immediate measures to isolate the affected systems and cut off external access. As of the following Monday, several affiliate websites remained offline, showcasing the extensive operational disruptions caused by the incident.

Reporting to Authorities and Probing for Ransomware

In response to the cyberattack, Kyowon Group promptly reported the breach to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and other pertinent authorities. The company is actively restoring its systems while performing thorough security checks to gauge the scale of the breach.

A statement issued by the company confirmed their collaboration with cybersecurity professionals and relevant agencies to investigate the breach’s cause and its potential impact on data integrity. They reassured customers that in the event of a confirmed data leak, they would follow legal protocols to notify affected individuals transparently.

Kyowon Group underscored its commitment to restoring access to its sites and services as security measures are implemented. “We will utilize all possible resources to stabilize our services and prioritize customer protection throughout the recovery process,” the company stated. This incident is particularly critical due to the group’s diverse range of businesses, which includes well-known education brands like Kyowon Kumon and Red Pen, as well as lifestyle services ranging from home appliances to travel and hospitality.
