Maine Teen Becomes First Minor Federally Charged for Crimes Linked to Violent Extremist Group 764

Published:

The FBI has announced that a 17-year-old from Maine is the first minor to be federally charged and adjudicated for crimes related to their involvement in 764, a violent extremist group. The charges include conspiracy to sexually exploit a child, cyberstalking, and identity theft, among others.

A judge has ordered the teen to remain detained, highlighting a significant shift in the Justice Department’s approach to prosecuting minors involved in violent extremism. Ted Docks, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, emphasized that age will not protect individuals from accountability for such serious crimes.

The group 764 is part of a larger network known as The Com, which seeks to incite social unrest and exploit vulnerable populations. This case marks a pivotal moment in law enforcement’s strategy to address the involvement of minors in extremist activities, as the FBI is currently investigating over 500 individuals linked to 764 and its affiliates.

According to Allison Nixon, chief research officer at Unit 221B, this case could have broader implications for how violent extremist crimes are prosecuted, particularly those involving minors. The FBI’s actions signal a commitment to closing loopholes that have historically allowed juveniles to evade serious consequences for their actions.
