MARTAC integrates SEA.AI machine vision into USVs for enhanced autonomous situational awareness

Published:

MARTAC has integrated SEA.AI’s machine vision technology into its unmanned surface vessels (USVs), enhancing their situational awareness capabilities. This integration allows USVs to classify maritime contacts in real time at the sensor level, enabling autonomous operations beyond the operators’ line of sight without the need for continuous human monitoring of video feeds.

Announced on October 13, 2026, this partnership marks a significant advancement in the operational capabilities of MARTAC’s USVs, which are designed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), security, and patrol missions. The integration of SEA.AI’s technology is particularly relevant in today’s maritime environment, where traditional systems like radar and Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) often leave critical gaps in situational awareness.

Addressing Gaps in Maritime Domain Awareness

Radar systems provide essential information about a contact’s position and radar cross-section but fail to identify the nature of the contact. AIS, while useful, is voluntary and can be easily manipulated, leaving vessels that do not broadcast their information undetected. In a contemporary grey zone environment, these limitations can be exploited by adversaries using dark vessels or spoofed identities, posing significant operational risks.

Transforming Camera Feeds into Actionable Intelligence

While electro-optical and thermal cameras have been utilized in maritime sensing, their effectiveness is often compromised by the need for human analysts to interpret the captured video. SEA.AI’s technology addresses this issue by performing AI inference directly at the sensor level. This allows the system to classify contacts in real time, providing actionable information such as vessel type, heading, and proximity without requiring human intervention.

This capability is crucial for USVs operating beyond visual range, as it enables them to maintain situational awareness autonomously, distinguishing between relevant data and a continuous stream of unprocessed imagery.

Designed for Autonomous Missions

MARTAC’s T38 Devil Ray USV recently completed an impressive eight-day fully autonomous mission off the coast of California, navigating over 400 nautical miles without crew or escort. In challenging conditions, such as Sea State 5, the ability to autonomously detect and understand the environment is vital, and SEA.AI’s integration provides this essential capability.

“We built SEA.AI in 2018 around a conviction that the camera alone was never going to be enough at sea. The intelligence had to be in the system, not in a person watching a screen somewhere,” said Marcus Warrelmann, CEO of SEA.AI.

Diogo Arreda, Managing Director US of SEA.AI, emphasized the importance of their technology: “What we add to a MARTAC vessel is not another feed to monitor; it is a system that watches, understands, and reports.” This partnership aims to enhance operational capabilities in real missions.

Proven Technology with Real-World Applications

Since its inception in 2018, SEA.AI has pioneered maritime machine vision, combining optical and thermal sensors with AI to detect objects that traditional systems often miss, such as persons overboard and unlit vessels. With over 1,300 systems deployed globally across various sectors, including recreational and commercial operations, SEA.AI’s technology has demonstrated its effectiveness in real-world maritime scenarios.

The integration of SEA.AI’s machine vision into MARTAC’s USVs represents a significant step forward in enhancing autonomous maritime operations, ensuring that these vessels can operate effectively in complex environments while maintaining a high level of situational awareness.
