Merck Foundation Hosts the 7th Edition of First Ladies Initiative Summit

The Merck Foundation, the charitable division of Merck KGaA Germany, recently organized the 7th Edition of its First Ladies Initiative Summit (MFFLI Summit 2025). The event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, the Chairman of the Merck Foundation Board of Trustees, along with Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, the Foundation’s CEO and President of the initiative, and H.E. Mrs. Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, the First Lady of The Gambia. The summit welcomed other First Ladies from various African countries including Angola, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, and Mozambique.

Progress Made Since 2017

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej expressed her enthusiasm in collaborating with H.E. Mrs. Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, stating, “Since our partnership began in 2017, we have accomplished significant strides forward.” The partnership has resulted in awarding 87 scholarships to local Gambian doctors in crucial fields such as Fertility and Embryology, Oncology, and Neonatal Care. These initiatives are set to change the landscape of patient care in The Gambia, marking notable progress in healthcare training.

Empowering Young Doctors and Girls

H.E. Mrs. Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow echoed her excitement for the summit, highlighting how it serves as a platform for discussing strategies for Africa’s and Asia’s future. “We have provided 87 scholarships for our local doctors, a significant accomplishment for our nation that enhances health security and drives our economic development,” she noted. Additionally, through the ‘Educating Linda’ program, the initiative is sponsoring the education of 40 talented but underprivileged schoolgirls each year, equipping them with knowledge and skills for a brighter future.

Detailed Breakdown of Scholarships

Detailed figures shared by Merck Foundation illustrate the scholarships distributed across various medical fields:

  • 27 scholarships were allocated for oncology training, aimed at delivering high-quality cancer care in The Gambia.
  • 23 scholarships supported training in Fertility and Embryology, along with courses in Sexual and Reproductive health.
  • 4 scholarships were dedicated to Diabetes Care, fostering advancements in women’s health.
  • Additional 4 scholarships focused on specialized fields including Respiratory Care and Neonatal Medicine.
  • Lastly, 2 scholarships were earmarked for a Master’s Degree in Diabetes, allowing graduates to establish their own clinics.

Building Healthcare Capacity

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej emphasized the importance of capacity-building in healthcare, stating, “Since 2012, Merck Foundation has been committed to enhancing healthcare capacities worldwide.” The Foundation has successfully awarded 2,280 scholarships across 52 countries in 44 underserved medical specialties. The ongoing collaboration aims to elevate healthcare standards in The Gambia further.

Media Training and Awards Announced

The summit also included discussions on the role of media in addressing pressing social and health issues. Merck Foundation has conducted three editions of Online Health Media Training alongside the Office of the First Lady of The Gambia, emphasizing the media’s role as a voice for the unheard.

Additionally, they launched a call for applications for eight significant awards aimed at recognizing excellence in media, music, fashion, filmmaking, and several other creative fields, partnering with the First Lady of The Gambia.

Children’s Storybooks Launched

A notable initiative revealed during the summit was the introduction of seven children’s storybooks designed to address various social issues, such as infertility stigma and the importance of education for girls. Titles include “Educating Linda” and “More Than a Mother,” which aim to inspire young minds while raising awareness.

The proceedings of the 7th Edition of the Merck Foundation First Ladies Initiative were streamed live on various social media platforms, ensuring broader accessibility for those wanting to follow the discussions and initiatives presented. With an active presence on multiple channels, including Facebook and YouTube, Merck Foundation continues to engage the community in its efforts.
