National Awareness Campaign for Spaza Shop Support Fund Kicks Off in Mpumalanga

Empowering Local Entrepreneurs

The national awareness campaign promoting the Spaza Shop Support Fund has made its way to Volksrust, Mpumalanga. This initiative presents an essential opportunity for township-based entrepreneurs to engage directly with government representatives and partner organizations on strategies to access crucial support for their businesses.

A Collaborative Effort

Spearheaded by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) and the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), this ongoing campaign represents a dedicated national drive. Its primary objective is to increase awareness about the support systems available for spaza shops and township convenience stores. By addressing information disparities, the campaign aims to deliver services more effectively to local communities.

Previous Successes and Focus Areas

This leg of the campaign follows successful events held in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West, the Free State, and the Northern Cape. The current focus is on entrepreneurs and spaza shop owners within the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Ka Seme Local Municipality and its neighboring areas. This demographic is notably underserved yet plays a critical role in strengthening the local economy.

Understanding the Spaza Shop Support Fund

At the heart of this initiative is the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund, which was launched in April 2025 by Parks Tau, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, alongside Stella Ndabeni, the Minister of Small Business Development. The administration of the fund falls under the expertise of the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDF) and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), both of which are integral components of the DTIC and DSBD.

Key Benefits for Attendees

Participants in the Volksrust event can expect to receive comprehensive insights and guidance on how to apply for both financial and non-financial assistance. The range of support available includes:

  • Affordable Stock Access: Collaborations with delivery partners to provide cost-effective inventory.
  • Infrastructure Enhancements: Upgrades such as shelving, refrigeration, and security systems.
  • Essential Technology: Provision of point-of-sale devices to streamline transactions.
  • Business Training: Workshops covering compliance, digital literacy, credit health, and food safety.
  • Market Access: Opportunities created through partnerships with black industrialists and local manufacturers to broaden market reach.

Fostering Economic Inclusivity

According to a statement from the DTIC, this campaign emphasizes boosting the competitiveness of township businesses and encouraging inclusive economic participation. The initiative seeks to integrate more informal retailers into the wider retail value chain, thereby enhancing their sustainability and growth potential.

This awareness campaign in Volksrust serves as a vital platform for local entrepreneurs to discover available resources, share experiences, and network with peers and government officials. As these business owners navigate a landscape filled with challenges, educational outreach and accessible funding options are crucial for their success and the prosperity of their communities.
