NASA’s subscale flight lab supports advanced aerospace research and testing

Cyber Warriors Conclave — nine editions, one cyber safe nation

NASA’s Dale Reed Subscale Flight Research Laboratory at the Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, is advancing aerospace research through innovative testing methods. The lab utilizes small, remotely piloted and autonomous aircraft to explore new technologies and concepts that may be challenging or costly to evaluate at full scale. This approach supports a range of research, including advanced navigation systems for future lunar and Martian landings.

Team Expertise and Contributions

The lab’s team, consisting of chief engineer Derek Abramson, chief pilot Justin Hall, and drone pilot Justin Link, plays a crucial role in integrating emerging aerospace technologies with the lab’s subscale aircraft fleet. They also design and build aircraft or flight experiments as needed to assess new concepts. Each member brings a wealth of experience from their backgrounds in aviation and engineering.

Abramson’s expertise includes technical oversight and system design, developed through his service in the U.S. Navy and the aerospace industry. Hall is recognized for his creative problem-solving skills and commitment to flight safety, while Link specializes in designing research vehicles and has extensive hands-on experience with large drones.

Passion for Flight

The team’s passion for aviation began in their childhoods, with each member engaging in building and flying radio-controlled aircraft. Abramson’s journey started with rubber-band powered models, leading to a pilot’s license and work on various military aircraft. Hall was inspired by witnessing historic aircraft, while Link’s family history in aviation fueled his interest from a young age.

On weekends, the team often continues their hobby by building and flying radio-controlled aircraft, attending trade shows, and exploring new technologies. Their shared enthusiasm for flight has been a driving force behind their collaboration at NASA.

The work conducted at the subscale flight lab is integral to NASA’s broader missions across aeronautics, science, and exploration. By leveraging their combined experience in rapid design, fabrication, integration, and flight testing, the team is able to bring innovative ideas to fruition, ultimately contributing to the future of aerospace technology.
