Massive Data Leak at MC2 Data Exposes Sensitive Information of US Citizens

Cybernews exclusive research has uncovered a massive data leak at MC2 Data, a background check firm, impacting a staggering number of US citizens. The company, along with similar entities, collects and analyzes data from various public sources to create detailed profiles used by employers, landlords, and others for decision-making.

Websites operated by MC2 Data, such as PrivateRecords.net and PeopleSearcher, were affected by the leak, exposing 106,316,633 records of US citizens. The breach, caused by a human error, left a database containing sensitive information accessible to anyone on the internet, including names, emails, IP addresses, encrypted passwords, and more.

The leaked data also included information on 2,319,873 users who subscribed to MC2 Data services, raising concerns about privacy and security. Cybernews researchers warn that the exposure of such personally identifiable information puts countless individuals at risk of identity theft and other malicious attacks.

Aras Nazarovas, a Cybernews security researcher, highlighted the potential dangers posed by the leaked information, stating that cybercriminals could exploit the detailed reports for malicious purposes. The leaked subscribers, who could be high-value targets, may face increased risks of cyberattacks.

MC2 Data’s mishandling of sensitive data has raised questions about the company’s data protection practices and compliance with regulations. The leak not only jeopardizes individuals’ privacy but also exposes businesses and organizations relying on background check services to potential risks.

Cybernews reached out to MC2 Data for a response, but no comment has been received yet. The incident underscores the importance of robust data security measures and regulatory compliance in safeguarding personal information in the digital age.
