NSU Launches Cybersecurity Center to Enhance Research and Workforce Development in Bangladesh

North South University (NSU) has inaugurated its Cybersecurity Center to advance research, develop skilled professionals, and strengthen Bangladesh’s resilience against emerging cyber threats. This initiative, launched on July 16, aims to address the growing need for cybersecurity expertise in the region. The center is established under the APAC Cybersecurity Fund of The Asia Foundation, in collaboration with Protect.ngo and the Global Cyber Alliance, with support from Google.org. This development is crucial for cybersecurity decision-makers as it signifies a strategic investment in workforce development and national security.

Inauguration Ceremony Highlights

The formal inauguration took place at NSU’s Plaza Area, attended by notable figures including Rehan Asif Asad, Adviser to the Prime Minister for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, who served as the chief guest. Other attendees included Aziz Al Kaiser, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NSU; Benajir Ahmed, Member of the Board of Trustees; Kazi Faisal Bin Seraj, Country Representative of The Asia Foundation; and Sabbir Ahmed, Country Manager of Visa for Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Commitment to Cybersecurity Education

Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of NSU, presided over the ceremony, emphasizing the university’s commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary research. Professor Dr. Shazzad Hosain, Director of the Cybersecurity Center, highlighted ongoing projects and strategic initiatives aimed at developing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. He stated, “Through strong collaboration among academia, industry, and government, we aim to develop the next generation of cybersecurity professionals and contribute to Bangladesh’s digital resilience.”

Government Support and Strategic Importance

In his keynote remarks, Rehan Asif Asad stressed the necessity for collective action to counter growing cyber threats. He asserted that “Cybersecurity must remain one of the government’s top priorities, alongside connectivity and digital public infrastructure.” This sentiment underscores the government’s recognition of cybersecurity as a critical component of national security.

Collaboration for a Secure Digital Future

Aziz Al Kaiser remarked that the center reflects NSU’s commitment to preparing future-ready graduates and contributing to the country’s digital transformation. He noted that by uniting academia, industry, and government, the center would catalyze innovation and research, fostering a secure digital ecosystem. Benajir Ahmed added that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility that requires strong cross-sector partnerships, emphasizing the center’s role in building knowledge and institutional capacity.

Roundtable Discussion on Cybersecurity Ecosystem

Following the inauguration, a high-level roundtable convened representatives from government, academia, industry, development organizations, and media. Participants discussed emerging cyber threats, workforce development, public-private collaboration, and strategies for strengthening Bangladesh’s cybersecurity ecosystem. This collaborative approach is essential for addressing the complexities of cybersecurity in an increasingly digital world.
